Helping Your Child Grow from Simple to Extended Sentences at Home (Prep–Year 2)

At Holy Family, we support our students from Prep to Year 2 in developing their writing skills by guiding them from simple sentences to more detailed and engaging extended sentences. With a little practise and encouragement at home, you can help reinforce these important skills.

Starting with Simple Sentences

In the early stages, children begin by writing simple sentences that include a subject and a verb, such as “The dog runs.” At Holy Family, we encourage students to ensure their sentence makes sense and clearly shares an idea. You can support your child at home by asking, “Who is it about?” and “What are they doing?”

Adding More Detail and Vocabulary

As children grow in confidence, we guide them to add more detail to their writing while also developing a richer and more diverse vocabulary. This might include describing words (adjectives), stronger verbs, or more precise word choices. For example: “The dog runs” can become “The big dog runs fast,” and then further improve to “The large, energetic dog sprints quickly.”

At home, you can prompt your child with questions like, “Who is in the sentence?”, “What kind?”, “How?”, and “Can we choose a better word?” Encouraging children to move beyond simple words like biggood, or went helps make their writing more interesting and expressive.

Using ‘Who, When, Where, and Why’

At Holy Family, we encourage students to extend their sentences by thinking about who, when, where, and why something is happening. For example:“The hairy dog runs quickly in the park after school.”This helps children create richer and more meaningful sentences.

Model and Share Writing

Children learn best by seeing writing in action. Try writing together at home—start with a simple sentence and take turns adding more detail by including who, when, where, and why. Talking about their day and turning it into a sentence is also a great way to practise, and aligns with the approach we use at Holy Family.

Make Writing Fun and Meaningful

Encourage your child to write about topics they enjoy, such as their favourite story, a family outing, or a picture they have drawn. At Holy Family, we know that when writing is meaningful, children are more engaged and willing to take risks in their learning.

Celebrate Effort

We value effort and growth at Holy Family. Writing is a skill that develops over time, so it is important to celebrate your child’s attempts and successes. Positive encouragement builds confidence and supports continued improvement.

By working together, we can help our Prep to Year 2 students grow from writing simple sentences to creating detailed and expressive writing. Your support at home makes a wonderful difference in your child’s learning journey.
