CLASSROOM NEWS

Classroom news is a special event in classes with students excitedly bringing in items to show their peers or recounting a special event. Whilst it is a highlight for our students, teachers actually organise news or show and tell sessions to build confidence and communication skills.

Children are often so excited to talk about their chosen item, story, or idea, which helps develop their speaking and listening skills in an authentic way. It also encourages curiosity, as classmates ask questions and learn from one another’s experiences. Classroom news also supports language development by giving the children regular opportunities to express their thoughts clearly and expand their vocabulary. It also strengthens their social skills, helping children to practise turn-taking, active listening, and respectful responses.

You can assist your child to successfully participate in school news by rehearsing with them what they can share with their class at home. Asking them questions about their news such as:

  • What it is?

  • Where was the event?

  • Why is it special?

  • How do you use it?

  • What did you learn?

Encouraging and rehearsing with your child/ren to look at their audience, stand still and to speak in a clear, loud, voice will also prepare them to successfully share their news with their classmates.

Class teachers often prepare a roster for school news in their class to ensure everyone gets a turn. Families are encouraged to follow this roster and only send in additional news after running it past the teacher to avoid disappointment.
