Learning from Tristan Bancks: Stories Behind the Books

Scar Town spoilers enclosed! Do not read if you don’t want spoilers!

On Monday the 18th of May, I attended an author interview of Tristan Bancks, interviewed by Your Kid’s Next Read. In this webinar, he talked about his new book, Raised by Wolves, a sequel to his bestseller, Two Wolves. Towards the end of the 1-hour session, the viewers were permitted to ask some questions in the chat. Since I was the 2nd person to ask a question, the interviewer chose my question and asked Tristan; what was your inspiration for your book Scar Town? His answer was that he spent his holidays in places like Jindabyne NSW, which was deliberately flooded for a hydro-electric scheme, which created Lake Jindabyne. From this history, he thought of the idea of a sunken town coming back from the dead. It was also inspired by one of the short stories he wrote in 2009. The plot of the vanishing policeman and kidnapped child was based off real events of a kid going missing. Overall, the event was amazing and learning about his new book was truly exciting.

Team Ironside at National Simultaneous Storytime

Many of our students came together on Wednesday to take part in National Simultaneous Storytime, joining thousands of children across Australia in reading Luna Roo and the Kangaroo Baller. Through the story we explored the importance of teamwork, persistence, and resilience — three qualities that help us grow not only as readers, but as learners and friends. There was something truly special about seeing students gathered together, sharing the same story and celebrating the power of reading as a community. A very big thank you to Mrs Kelly, who took on the role of storyteller. Her expressive reading helped bring Luna Roo to life and made the experience memorable for everyone. What a wonderful way to celebrate reading and connection across our school.

Get Caught Reading Photo Competition

Our much-loved reading competition is back! The photo competition encourages our students to celebrate and share the magical moments of reading.

Students are invited to snap a photo of themselves reading. Whether students are curled up in a cosy corner, sharing a book with family, a pet, or a favourite teddy, or discovering a story in an unexpected place. Every photo helps inspire others to pick up a book and get caught reading too, so start dreaming up your perfect shot.
