Term 2 Reflections

Art

Foundation:

Foundation students completed their ‘I am Me’ self portraits which, I think everyone can agree, look gorgeous. Students experimented with primary colours to create vibrant backgrounds for their posed photos and identity statements. These artworks are currently on display in the Foundation corridor.

Aligning with their STEAM unit, Healthy Bodies, Foundation students have been exploring shape, form and colour by creating fruit and vegetable sculptures these last few weeks. They used newspaper and foil to create their shapes and covered them in paper mache before painting them. Completed fruits and vegetables are on display in the Foundation corridor.

Year 1 & 2:

Earlier this term, students explored the colourful portrait artworks of artists such as Ken Done, Frida Kahlo and Picasso and took inspiration from them to complete their own vibrant self-portraits. These past few weeks, students have been inspired by Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama and her dotty sculptural installations. Aligning with their STEAM unit about communities, students created their very own dotty mini galleries. These expressive artworks can currently be viewed in the Year 1 corridor. Do pop by to admire.

Year 3 & 4:

Our abstract portraits were a challenging but rewarding project for Year 3/4 students. Inspired by Paul Klee’s lines and shapes, students created colourful warm or cool palette backgrounds on which they transferred an abstract image based on three blind drawings and highlighted it in black markers. Some of these masterpieces are on display in the school’s front foyer.

Year 3/4 students have ended the term with designing and constructing Mexican Alebrijes inspired 3D whimsical creatures using a recycled container, newspaper and foil. Students will continue working on these next term.

Year 5 & 6.

Spooky. Whimsical. Moody. Gothic. Perfect descriptions for Year 5/6 student’s Tim Burton-inspired self-portraits. Students applied layering and shading techniques, rubbings and added a splash of colour to create truly impactful artworks.

Aligning with their STEAM unit on cyclones and floods, and inspired by Yayoi Kusama’s dotty sculptural installations, Year 5/6 students have been busy collaboratively constructing and painting dotty raindrops for their STEAM raindrop installation.

German

What a wunderbare (wonderfulterm we’ve had. Here’s a brief reflection on our learning in Term 2 and a snapshot of some of the work the students have been doing. You can also find links to a few of the songs and resources we’ve used.

In Foundation we have been learning to count and use the numbers 1-5 in German. We have also learned the colours of the rainbow in German and colours in our Australian flags. We used a range of songs, videos, games, activities and the beloved children’s book ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ (Die kleine Raupe Nimmersatt) to keep learning fun and engaging. You can find our Regenbogen song here to practice the colours of the rainbow at home and listen to a read aloud of Die kleine Raupe Nimmersatt.

Year 1 and 2 students started the term taking a closer look at the German alphabet and learning how to spell their name in German. We then learned the names of different farm animals and how to describe them by colour and size. You can find the German ABC song here to practice at home and a German version of Old MacDonald for a bit of fun.

Year 3 and 4 students learned about the seasons and how to talk about the weather. They applied some of their knowledge to create posters, labels and information texts on their rooftop gardens STEAM project. Students also revisited the German alphabet to assist in developing their reading and writing skills. You can check out our German ABC Rap here.

Year 5 and 6 students focused on how to ask and tell the time in German to build their functional language skills while also supporting their mathematical knowledge and numeracy skills.
