Year 6

What a fantastic term of learning we have had in Grade 6!
Reading
Students explored a range of rich texts, including Dirrarn and Once, while developing their comprehension skills through predicting, questioning, summarising and analysing characters, themes and author techniques. Students discussed important themes, explored character perspectives and examined how authors use language and text structures to engage readers and communicate ideas. Through class discussions and written responses, students deepened their understanding of how authors convey meaning and influence readers.
Writing
This term, students explored a variety of writing genres, including narrative writing, factual recounts and information texts. They developed their ability to engage readers through well-structured narratives featuring detailed settings, interesting characters and effective use of tension. Students also learned how to organise and present factual information clearly, using appropriate text structures, headings and supporting details. Across all writing tasks, students focused on using precise vocabulary, varied sentence structures and effective editing strategies to improve the quality and impact of their writing.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students investigated fractions, decimals and percentages. They compared and ordered fractions, explored equivalent fractions, represented fractions on number lines and solved real-world problems involving fractions. Students strengthened their understanding of mental computation strategies for addition and subtraction, including partitioning, compensation and friendly numbers. They also developed fluency with vertical addition and subtraction algorithms, applying these methods to solve increasingly complex problems and checking the reasonableness of their answers. Throughout the term, students explained and justified their mathematical thinking during rich problem-solving tasks.
STEAM
Students explored natural disasters through our STEAM program, investigating the impacts of cyclones and floods. Using the design thinking process, they designed and constructed houses suited to specific land types to help protect them from these natural disasters. Throughout the project, students demonstrated creativity, collaboration and perseverance as they refined and improved their designs. They thoroughly enjoyed showcasing their work at our STEAM Expo. Afterwards, they tested their houses against simulated strong winds, flying debris and heavy rain to evaluate their effectiveness.
