Two weeks ago, Mrs Mellish, Miss Ballouk and I attended a conference in Melbourne as part of our connection with Social Ventures Australia (for more information about The Connection and to see stories about GEPS, click here). The focus was on technology and innovation - Maintaining equity in a digital landscape.
Most of the 2 days were about AI - the possibilities, the pitfalls and the potential. We heard from many speakers and experts in the field and will be sharing our learnings with staff and our community over the months to come.
In trying to summarize the conference for you, I used the assistance of ChatGPT to help explain what generative AI is and why we might to exploring this topic in education. Here's the response:
Hello Parents,
We're excited to share a glimpse into a groundbreaking educational frontier: Artificial Intelligence, or AI. Simply put, AI is like a digital brain that can think, learn, and even create things. It's the technology behind smart assistants and self-driving cars.
Now, you might wonder, "How does this relate to my child's education?" Well, imagine AI as an extra-special helper for teachers. It can design fun lessons, sparking curiosity in subjects like math and science. This means more engaging learning experiences tailored to your child's needs.
Exploring AI in primary schools is about being on the cutting edge of education. We're taking cautious steps, ensuring AI enriches the classroom without overshadowing the teacher's role. Your child's learning journey remains our top priority, and AI is a tool that supports their growth while ensuring a safe and nurturing environment.
We're excited about this educational adventure, blending innovation with a steadfast commitment to your child's education. (ChatGPT, 26/8/23)
