Year 5 Excursion

The Year 5 Excursion

On Tuesday 29th August, Year 5 went to Twisted Science for our excursion. It was absolutely remarkable! We all became SCIENTISTS for the day! We learnt so much about science and we experimented with SAP (Super-Absorbent Polymer).

SAP is a white powder and when dipped in water it turns into a solid jelly-like substance. SAP is used to make fake snow and in nappies. As scientists, we hypothesise whether changing the amount of water would affect the absorbency of the SAP. In groups, we experimented 6 times changing the amount of water in 10 ml each time and using 0.4 grams of SAP. We timed it in 1 minute, 1.5 minutes and 2 minutes intervals, seeing if the SAP would solidify in the given time. In all the different experiments we saw that 30ml of water with 0.4 grams of SAP solidified in all the experiments.

After learning about SAP, we were so excited to explore the rest of Twisted Science! There were two sections, the green room and the blue room. We were lucky enough to explore both! In the green room, we played with a bunch of different interactive hands-on science activities such as making huge bubbles, making different paper models and watching them fly, making our own music and we got a close up look at different bugs. In the blue room, we made paper rockets, played 3D naughts and crosses, we escaped a rope maze and we even walked into an upside down room! There were a tonne of interactive activities that kept us on the edge of our seats. The visit was extraordinarily thrilling and we all loved being scientists. This excursion showed us what being a scientist is all about!
