What is a Reconciliation Action Plan?

A Reconciliation Action Plan a strategic document with practical plans for action. It sets out how an organisation is committing to contribute to reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. At Port Melbourne Primary School, our RAP focuses on building connections to local community, teaching and understanding Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander perspectives, and learning  about our shared history.

At Port Melbourne PS, a small group of staff and parents are working on achieving the goals set out in the Reconciliation Action Plan.

What has happened this year at PMPS so far?

We were lucky enough to have Aunty Jacko, a local elder, in to speak to our Reconciliation Week assembly and to visit some classrooms to work with students.Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and perspectives are being incorporated into the curriculum planning across the school. After a request from students, a third flagpole was installed to fly the Torres Strait Islander flag.We have incorporated an Acknowledgement of Country in every classroom, every morning, as part of our Ready to Learn routine. The Year 4 Camp (Jungai) supports the classroom learning in Term 3 as it focuses on Indigenous perspectives, the natural environment and cultural awareness.New Acknowledgment of Country plaques have been ordered from Indigenous artists/suppliers and will soon be displayed in our Reception area. Garden beds have been replanted with a focus on native and local trees and plants.
