Digital Habits Data 2023

Many of you may recall the Parent Evening that we hosted by the great people at the Cyber Safety Project. Students were also shared in presentations with great advice designed to keep them safe online.

Well, the data is out for their 2023 Digital Habits taken from over 5000 students across Australia and I share some of that data by way of helping to keep the dialogue going in homes, on the good habits and boundaries you can enforce to help protect your young person.

  • An alarming 68.5% of students were allowed to take their devices into their bedrooms overnight
  • 45% felt the need to constantly check their phone
  • Only 35% said that they would turn to a parent if something went wrong online
  • 66% feel that using social media can be a distraction to learning (thankfully the Mobile Device ban at St Peter's is helping to address this at school but I wonder how it is working as students complete their homework)
  • 53% have seen negative behaviours towards others online
  • 14% have received a nude image and of that, nearly half were in Years 7, 8 or 9.

As those who attended the Cyber Safety Project presentation term one would agree, this company is not just about alarmist data with no answers, they are about offering practical advice on what you can do to make your child's online experience a positive and healthy one. Below is a slide that outlines their six proactive measures based on the themes of

  • Reflect
  • Review
  • Communicate
  • Role Model
  • Educate
  • Promote
