From the Archives

In 1996, the then fledgling St. Peter’s College with an enrolment of 570 students presented the first college production: Grease. The next two productions were annual. They were Bugsy Malone and a musical adaption of To Kill a Mockingbird. This latter won the award for best school production.

In 2000, the production cycle changed from an annual one to a biennial timetable. It was the first of several original productions written by former staff member, Mr. Frank Carter. It was called For Art’s Sake.

Over the years the production has alternated with productions of ‘commercial’ shows such as Footloose (2006) and Little Shop of Horrors (2012); literary adaptions such as Gatsby (2008) and The Time Machine (2010) and original shows such as After Forever (2002). Of course, no list of school productions would be complete without at least one Shakespearean inclusion. In 2004, A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream was musically adapted and presented to an appreciative audience.

Prior to 2023, the last St. Peter’s College production was High School Musical in 2018. The following year was a ‘fallow’ year with no production scheduled.

The events of Covid19 prevented the 2020 production, although initial rehearsals had commenced. Similarly, the effects of Covid19 prevented a production in 2022.

After five years’ hiatus, this year marks the return of the St. Peter’s College Production as students, with the assistance of their mentoring staff present Legally Blonde the Musical. It will also be the first St. Peter’s College production to be presented in The Performing Arts Centre (Geode Centre) at Clyde North.

Update on the Debating activities of Clyde North Campus.

We had two teams of junior students, one of intermediate students, and one of senior debaters representing our campus at the Southern Independent Schools (SIS) competition. We are pleased to inform you that all four teams participated actively and achieved commendable success in both the Cross Campus and SIS debating competitions.  The Cross Campus debates were conducted with a high level of preparation and formality, showcasing the dedication put in by our students. It was delightful to witness the bonds grow between students from both Clyde North and Cranbourne campuses as they engaged in rigorous academic competition. This experience has undoubtedly contributed to their personal growth and development.  In the SIS Competition held at Flinders College Tyabb on the 27 July, students demonstrated skills and dedication in debating. Each Clyde North team was very proud to secure victories in the prepared topics. Their ability to articulate arguments, engage in critical thinking, and present persuasive speeches was commendable. Johnathan Evans and Ashley Bijoy were the best speakers in their debates. Students will be allowed to further develop their expertise in impromptu debates and crafting techniques of rebuttals in preparation for Round Two of the competition, which will take place on 24 August.  As their debating teachers, we have observed their continuous improvement in public speaking, confidence building, and ability to analyse complex topics.

Lovers Lane Garfield Tree Planting VCEVM

On Monday, 7th of August, Year 12 VCE VM students from both the Clyde and the Cranbourne Campus travelled to Lovers Lane, Garfield to plant trees with Cannibal Creek Landcare group. We were set for a big day along Walkers Road drain as we were aiming to plant 500 trees for the day.

The purpose of this project was to promote my Sustainable Development Goal of “Life on Land”. We planted 500 trees for the day and developed a habitat for the Southern Brown Bandicoot. This was a great day out enjoyed by all students.

Year 10 Japanese Excursion to the City

Last week, Year 10 Japanese students from both campuses travelled to Melbourne to explore the city. How does that relate to Japanese class? The catch was that students had only a piece of paper with directions in Japanese and their brains to navigate their way to various locations around the Melbourne CBD. Some notable places students enjoyed were the Old Melbourne Gaol, the Shot Tower, Melbourne Central, and the Block Arcade. Students had to document their visit by taking photos and working together to understand how to get to each location. They ended their excursion at Chocolate Buddha and enjoyed a traditional Japanese Bento lunch. Currently, the students are now using the skills and knowledge that were gained from this excursion to write their own recommendations for travelling around Melbourne, and how to get there! Thank you to all the teachers involved in the excursion, and congratulations to our Japanese students for making it through this adventure using only their Japanese!

VCE VM Health Project

As part of the VCE VM (Vocation Major), Year 11 students completed a health project which involved the planning, promoting and implementing of an activity to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. This was also an opportunity for students to demonstrate their own emotional intelligence strategies that they have been learning about.  Students decided on a trip to Lysterfield Park and they were responsible for creating a series of health activities which included a personal training session, a mountain bike adventure, a bush walking activity and creating an alternative healthy lunch. After a day of careful planning including completing necessary risk assessments, the excursion took place and the Year 10 students who took part in the excursion were all engaged and gave positive reviews of the experience. The Year 11's are now looking forward to the next challenge in the VCE VM involving Community Cohesion at a national, local and state level.
