The BIG Sleepout 2023 - a huge success!

A message from Tiffany Butterworth and Ella Belfield, Year Eleven Students in Cert IV Business:

"What a night to remember! The annual big sleepout took place on Saturday 26 August and the final amount raised was over $40,000! There was estimated to be 100 – 120 gathered at the Albany Ag Pavilions, the same number experiencing homelessness in Albany every night. Congratulations to Merrifield Real Estate who won the prize for raising the largest funds – $8758.  A highlight of the night was when 10-year-old, Amali Nizam-Wood bravely shaved her head after reaching her target of raising $10,000. The feedback was overall positive throughout the night, especially regarding the musical performances. Big thanks to The Albany Shantymen and the GSG Music students.  Thank you to everyone that took part in this fundraiser, either by donating, showing up on the night, helping us out, or purchasing from the GSG cake stall."

I think Tiffany and Ella's words capture the essence of the impact that philanthropy has in a community such as ours. I am incredibly proud of the work that has been put into the event by this class - this experience was incredibly rich in learning, when framed within Vocational Education and Training (VET), and has established powerful connections to local business and industry in the context of a worthy cause. A huge thank you to Stacey Murnane and Ashley Ismail from the Albany Community Foundation, who have worked very closely with us over the past six months, mentoring the personal development and capacities of each of us as we planned and executed the event. Our partnership continues into next year, as planning commences for the next cohort of Year Eleven Cert IV students to continue the legacy of the BIG Sleepout in 2024.
