Foundation and Year 1
This week, the Foundation and Year 1 students completed their amazing musical instruments which were started last term, as part of the Term 2 Inquiry unit on Light and Sound. They transformed recycled materials into musical instruments ranging from guitars and drums to flutes, bells, and even harmonicas! Through this hands-on project, students not only explored the science behind sound but also honed their skills in collaboration and problem-solving. From brainstorming ideas to building and fine-tuning their instruments, every step was a testament to their creativity and teamwork.
Here are the Foundation and Year 1 students taking turns sharing their musical instruments with one another.
Year 2/3
Hello Families,
I hope you all had a relaxing break over the school holidays. This Term we are going on a journey around the world for Inquiry. We are very excited to learn about different parts of the world and how this relates to our own families. Below is a picture of our Inquiry display that will be filled with interesting details as the Term progresses, stay tuned!
Year 3/4
This week we have been learning about the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which lead us to talking about the people on the Australian Banknotes. The students spent some time researching the different notes and learning about what these people had done to help Australia.
On the $5 note is Queen Elizabeth II. She is on the note because she was the queen of the Commonwealth countries. There is also a picture of Parliament House, Canberra. There is also a symbol of the Golden Wattle.
It was interesting finding out about the $5 note because it gave a challenge to learn more in a specific timeframe. Massie, Katalina, Benjermen.
The people on the $10 note are Dame Mary Gilmore and AB Banjo Paterson. Banjo Paterson is a writer and poet and wrote the poem The Man from Snowy River. Dame Mary Gilmore is also famous for her poems. The horse represented The Man from Snowy River. We enjoyed researching about the $10 note and learning more about it. Laura, Chloe, Mason, Lawrence
John Flynn is on the $20 note because he started the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) in 1928. He started this service because the people in the outback were a long way away from medical services and sometimes died before getting to the doctors.
The symbols on the note are the first plane that was used. The Camel was used to travel to see sick people but it was very slow. Eva & Austin
Edith Cowan is one of the people on the $50. She was the first female member of the Australian Parliament and she was on the West Australian Education. I (Olivia) had a really good time and was impressed with how well we worked together as a team. We enjoyed learning more about the people on the Australian Banknotes. I (Mia) was surprised that she was on the Australian banknote. Olivia, Mia, Sai
It was fun talking about Australian banknotes. John Monash is on the 100 dollar note. I liked researching and writing about the the people and symbols. It was good working with partners on the project. Arvin and Aisha
Year 4/5
Aleisha, Allie and the Grade 4/5 children
We are really excited to be focussing on the topic '"The History of Australia''.
So far we found that the Aboriginal Dreamtime stories in the beginning were very much like the story of Genesis in the Bible. At first there was nothing that existed, then after some time through spirits, people appeared and the land was made beautiful.
Like the Holy Bible's story of Adam and Eve, they sinned and were cast away.
Year 5/6
As part of our Inquiry this term, we are using the wonderful picture story book 'My Place' to explore our place in the world. What is out story? What led us to this place, Sacred Heart, and what was our story before this? Students have been working this week on a story board, a template designed to help students organise their thinking. Each student will produce their own My Place storybook, which will be part of our exhibition later on in the term. Can't wait to see what they produce!
Although Sacred Heart has been here for more than 100 years. may different languages have been spoken in these classrooms. Arabic, Italian, Vietnamese have all been spoken at our school at various moments in time ~ it has been fantastic listening to our new student, Mohammadreza speak Persian with our wonderful parent helper, Gina, as she helps him settle into school. It makes us become an even richer community!
