Year Four

Dear Year Four Families,

We are approaching towards the end of Term Two, students have been busy exploring and diving deeply into our third Unit of Inquiry under the Transdisciplinary Theme: How We Express Ourselves.

Students have been looking into our Central Idea, "Media can be a powerful tool that influences thinking". They are discovering the impact of media on our thoughts and actions. It has been insightful to hear students’ thoughts and opinions about the role and impact of media in our everyday lives.

Reading

In class, students have made fantastic progress in Reading. They explored both fiction and non-fiction texts, diving deep into the unique elements of each. Students examined index and glossary pages in non-fiction books, enhancing their research skills and understanding of text organisation. They also investigated various information sources, comparing their effectiveness and reliability. To consolidate their learning, they created Venn diagrams to identify and differentiate the features of non-fiction texts. It has been a rewarding journey of discovery and skill-building for our young learners.

Writing

Year 4 students have made significant strides in their writing skills. They focused on identifying key information and keywords, taking detailed notes to create an informative text on the important topic of mental health and wellbeing. To organise their thoughts and gathered information, students either used a graphic organiser or created a mind map, which helped them plan and structure their information text effectively. This process not only improved their research and writing abilities but also deepened their understanding of mental health and wellbeing.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, our Year 4 students have been sharpening their addition and subtraction skills through various engaging strategies. They practiced jump strategies on a number line, enhancing their ability to visualise and solve problems step-by-step. Students also worked on vertical addition and subtraction, mastering the traditional column method. Additionally, they tackled problems involving finding the missing numbers, which strengthened their problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities. It's been a productive and enriching period, with students building a strong foundation in essential math skills.
