Humanities News
Year 7 SOSE classes have been examining the importance of water, one of the most precious resources that the earth provides. Learning to manage the fragile and unpredictable supply of fresh water has become one of our most important challenges.
Year 9 SOSE classes have been studying the development of Australia from 1750 to Federation in 1901. They have examined the consequences of colonisation on Indigenous peoples, the emerging Australian identity and the journey of the colonies to Federation.
Year 7 English classes have been learning about the techniques involved with film, and that film can be an effective means of communicating narrative, theme and issues as well as means of entertainment.

Poetry and Raps in Year 8 English
Year 8 English students recently analysed, created, and performed Australian poetry. Here are some examples of 'hidden' and 'found' poetry we developed in order to expand our definitions of poetry and stimulate our creativity. We also wrote and performed raps to the class which helped us continue to grow more comfortable speaking in public. Did you know that some 33% of the Bible is made up of poetry? We have begun to realise why this is the case: poetry is a powerful distinctive way to express feelings and ideas, and our sense of God's love, meaning, and purpose in our lives.

Head of Secondary
Parents of Secondary students are always encouraged to have Home Group teachers or subject teachers as the first point of contact when they have questions or concerns.
There are times when those questions or concerns are of more significance or are of a wider reach. In Mr Barker’s absence, any questions that would usually be directed to him can be sent to the Head of Secondary email address, hos@scc.tas.edu.au. Your questions will be forwarded on to the appropriate contact person.
Mrs Adams-Bell (Head of Pastoral Care) and Mrs Bennett will also continue to address any questions from Secondary students or their families.

Adjustments to Class Tasks (Repeat)
At SCC, we recognise that each student is an individual. They all develop at different rates and have strengths in different areas. Teachers regularly adjust class tasks to ensure that students can access learning at a level and in a form that is appropriate to them. They will also, at times, make changes to assessment tasks. They may provide additional resources or scaffolding, change the format, or require students to only complete set sections of a task.
Students are also encouraged to speak to or email their teacher if they feel they would benefit from some adjustments. There are a small number of students who, for example, find spoken tasks incredibly challenging, especially when required to address an audience of their peers. While we want students to stretch themselves and learn to overcome obstacles, we are mindful that learning is a journey. Students can request an adjustment to a presentation task but must do so at least two days before the due date. The student and teacher can then negotiate whether the student may present the task in written form or submit a recording of their presentation.
If a Year 7 or 8 student is not feeling confident enough to approach the teacher, parents/carers are welcome to email the teacher on behalf of their child. We hope that Year 9-12 students would be able to communicate directly with their teachers. If they are feeling nervous, parents/carers may help them to write an email to the teacher.
Device Malfunctions and Mishaps
As a BYOD school, our teachers plan for students to have working devices each lesson. That means that students need to ensure their devices are charged and functional each day. Devices are not the centre of our lessons but they are regularly utilised to enhance student learning through research, access to platforms such as digital texts and giving students diverse options for developing and demonstrating their learning.
While we have IT support on site for managing minor issues, we are not able to provide students with back-up devices should their own malfunction or be damaged. It is worth considering in advance options if a student’s device becomes unusable for a time as it is not feasible for students to be without a device for an extended period while their device is being repaired or replaced. Not having a device for an long period of time can adversely impact a student’s learning.
Using largely cloud-based platforms such as Microsoft365 and Schoolbox means that if there comes a time for students to change or upgrade devices during their Secondary journey, they will be able to easily access their files on other devices easily.
