Primary School
Learning in Year 2
The Year 2 students have been enthusiastically learning about fire safety this week with visiting Tasmania Fire Service officer, Firefighter Todd, as part of the School Fire Education Program. Students will spend 30 minutes each day learning how to keep safe around fires and during emergencies.
Firefighter Todd has shown students how to “crawl low and go, go, go” to the nearest safe exit if a smoke alarm goes off at their house. Students have also learnt:
- To call “fire” as they crawl to an exit to alert other members of the family.
- To use the back of their hand to feel the temperature of a closed door before opening it.
- How to call 000, including giving their name and address.
A fun and memorable part of the first session was when one of our students raced to get dressed in real firefighting gear. Firefighters must be ready to go in less than one minute – a super challenge!
At the end of the week, students will take home an activity and information book, which will support them to remember what they have learnt and communicate this important information to their family.
In other class activities this week, students have begun exploring the ways that sound helps us to communicate as part of our current Unit of Inquiry. They have also been listening to and responding to poetry, including the world’s shortest poem! Students have wondered how poets create their works, and they will experience this process themselves as they write a variety of poems in coming sessions. Our focus Learning Profile attribute is Communicator, and students are also developing their Communication Skills (Approaches to Learning) as we read, write, speak and listen together.

TFS Home Fire Safety Program K-6 (Repeat)
We are looking forward to having a firefighter from the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) visit the College this week (27-31 May) to present a Home Fire Safety Program to our Kinder to Year 6 students.
Kindergarten students, whilst not receiving structured lessons, can expect a visit from the firefighter who will leave some free fun activities for the students to complete.
The age-appropriate program for Prep to Year 6 classes is designed to raise fire awareness in children and includes fun in-class activities, videos, activity books, giveaways and an introduction to the new kid’s website www.tfskids.com.au.
Class teachers will be attending the sessions with the students and answer any questions during the week that arise.
Parents and other family members are encouraged to read the information and assist their child with the after-school activities provided.
The Tasmania Fire Service aims to deliver appropriate fire safety education to every primary school child in Tasmania and is part of the TFS’s ongoing commitment to create a fire safe Tasmania.
Key Fire Safety Messages include:
