Prep Community News

Dear Prep families,

Reading

In Week 7, the Prep students learnt two new sounds /w/ and /x/, and the heart word ‘do’. In Week 8, students learnt the new sound of /k/ and the heart word ‘you’. Through learning these new sounds, we have continued to practise our segmenting and blending skills to read words and familiar texts in the classroom. This week we began our Core Text Reading Unit focusing on the skill of Predicting. Week 8 will also continue to focus on Predicting and learning a new skill, Making Connections.

Writing

Writing in Weeks 7 and 8 consisted of now having learnt the sounds m, s, f, a, p, t, c, i, n, o, b, h, l, v, e, r, y, z, j, u, w, x and k. Each day the students are working very hard to form all of these letters correctly when writing. Alongside the letter sounds, students have also been working hard to include learnt heart words into the sentences that they write. Our writing in Weeks 7 and 8 are linked to our Core Texts unit, with students writing 5-star sentences using picture prompts from these texts to support them. Preps have been writing some fantastic 5-star sentences!

Maths

Weeks 7 and 8 saw us begin to learn about 2D shapes and 3D objects. So far, we have learnt the 2D shapes circle, triangle, square and rectangle and the 3D objects sphere and cube. The Prep students have had lots of fun in this maths unit by consolidating their learning through naming, describing, drawing, making and sorting 2D shapes and 3D objects. During this unit students also learnt that shapes and objects are all around us in the world, so they may enjoy going on a shapes/objects hunt to see which ones they can see in the environments around them!

Sip and Crunch

Sip and Crunch is a great way for your child to refuel on fresh fruit or vegetables during learning time. For Sip and Crunch, we ask that you add a small container of cut fruit or vegetables that is separate from your child’s lunchbox so that they can have it on their table to crunch on while learning. In addition, we also ask that you pack a bottle of water so that they can sip on this at their table during learning time.

Take Home Reading

At Tarneit Rise we have a take-home reading program. Each child will be given a day where they will change the books in their reading satchel or red prep bag with their teacher's assistance. The teacher will also be checking the journal so we can monitor how many nights of reading they have completed.

If you have any questions about this process, please speak to your child’s classroom teacher. They will be happy to help you.

Reminders

In Term 2, parents/carers are asked to let their child walk into the pod by themselves to help build their independence. At the end of the day, children need to be collected from their classrooms by their parents/carers.

Please ensure all items of clothing are labelled. This helps us to get them back to you if they are misplaced.

Kind regards,
