Grade 6 Community News

What a brilliant start to week 7 and 8! Teachers are busily writing reports and planning some exciting learning programmes for Grade 6.

In Week 7 on the 26th May it was National Sorry Day and on the 27th of May till 3rd June, is National Reconciliation Week. Both are significant days for people across Australia. To acknowledge this week students throughout the school coloured a handprinted cutout of the Aboriginal Flag, which was then displayed at the front lawn of the school.

It has been great to see students continuously coming to school prepared with their reading journals filled out. Reading at home really does make such a big difference. Thank you to all the parents who take the time to go over the books our students are reading.

In Reading, we have started our Ancient Greece and Rome study, with some interesting topics about Ancient Greek City-States, Greek Myths – Orpheus and Eurydice, Athens, the Birthplace of Democracy, growing up in Athens and many other inspiring topics.  Please ask your child to share what they are learning with you.

In writing, we are learning about historical narratives. Students will study the structure of historical narratives. They will also define and discuss what a historical narrative is, discuss the features of a historical narrative, and use note taking to keep track of ideas that inspire their writing. In Week 7 the children have retold the myth about Orpheus and Eurydice. Please ask your child to share what they have learned about narratives with you.

In Maths, we have started our unit on Decimals and Percentages. Students are enjoying this unit. They are learning to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals by whole numbers. Furthermore, they are learning to estimate and round to check the reasonableness of their answers.

Our Vocabulary words have been selected from our Ancient Greece and Rome unit. Feel free to ask your child how they can use a word in a sentence and give an antonym or synonym for each word.
