Grade 5 Community News
Dear Grade 5 families,
The end of term two is fast approaching and students are consistently working towards achieving their goals in class.
Reading Reconsidered
Students have now completed the text Inside Out & Back Again. We have to all agree that this text gave students multiple opportunities to have powerful discussions about the decisions, emotions and challenges Ha and her family had to endure with their escape from Vietnam to start a new life in America as refugees.
Students will start their next unit in week 8 about the Maya, Aztec and Inca Civilisations, their achievements, beliefs and the factors that led to their extinction.
Writing
Students are currently working towards publishing their historical narrative writing pieces. They are using the skills they’ve learned to create a piece of writing using the historical narrative rubric to guide them towards achieving their goals.
Content
During this final stretch of this unit students will be learning what an entrepreneur is. Students will work in small groups to design an innovative product or service they believe their teacher, or the community would need.
Mathematics
The Location unit has now been completed and students are currently working on Mass, Volume and Capacity where the students will measure the volume of objects, liquids and prisms using a formula. Explain the difference between volume and capacity. They will measure the mass of an object and compare the mass of objects.
Vocabulary
Students have been learning 5 new words each week. They are looking at the definition of the words, synonyms and antonyms for the words, and how to use the words in sentences. The focus of these words are to improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Word | Definition | Synonyms | Antonyms | Sentence | Letters | Syllables | Picture |
Recoil | the backward movement of something after it has been pushed or pulled forward. | rebound bounce back shrink | advance
| I shot the water gun, but the force of the water made the gun recoil and jump back in my hand. | 5 | 2 |
Cyber Safety Project
Students are learning how to create digital reminders to maintain safety when living, learning and playing online. Develop skills to scrutinise published media and evaluate the credibility of online information. With the pressure that is on children today in our online world we have to ensure that we keep our students safe.
