Dear Skye Families,

Welcome to Week 7!

Maths Open Afternoon

We were thrilled to see so many families join us for the Maths Open Afternoon last week. Thank you to the families who responded to our feedback survey. Here are some of the wonderful comments we received:

The Maths Open afternoon was good because...

  • "The games were very interactive and well thought out for young learners."
  • "Got to learn more about maths and it was a great experience."
  • "It engaged the children and families and it was fun."
  • "I had fun learning where the kids are at with their maths knowledge and new games."
  • "It was great to meet some teachers of other classes and year levels and be introduced to new maths games in a fun way. The competition was also fun - filling in the profile. Love the maths pack to take home too."
  • "Greater insight into how my child learns in the classroom."
  • "Instructions were easy to follow, and having an incentive to go around to all the classes to get the stamps was fun."
  • "Maths is my favourite subject and there were many ways to learn maths in a fun way!"
  • "Interesting and exciting. Kids were heartily and enthusiastically involved."
  • "Very welcoming, good consistent agenda on the classroom screen, teachers explained classroom activity well, and the math pamphlet was very good. Great to take home and handy to have the QR code for video. Kids enjoyed the time too."
  • "It was well organised. All classes within a year level were doing the same activity. It was nice for students/families to visit other classes/teachers. We learnt lots of new games. Thanks :)"
  • "It taught us as parents quick, easy games we can play at home with our children."
  • "I got to see what my child was learning in the classroom and how that transferred to the other activities. Really nice way to make maths fun for the children with a competitive element."
  • "I could see the learning taking place at my daughter’s school. The school was engaging parents in learning and takes maths seriously."

Student Attitudes to School Survey

Over the next two weeks, Kim and I will be administering the annual Student Attitudes to School Survey for all students in Years 4 to 6. This survey is a valuable tool that helps us gain insights into student perceptions about their school, learning, peer relationships, health and wellbeing, and life in general. We look forward to understanding more about our students’ experiences and using this feedback to enhance their learning environment.

Congratulations to the following students who received Excellence Awards at our last assembly:

Staffing Update

I’m excited to announce that Mr. Salter will be rejoining our school after his brief stint at Cowes Primary School this year. Unfortunately, Mr. Ross will be leaving Skye at the end of this term to return to Hampton Primary School, where he holds an ongoing position. Mr. Salter will take full control of 4A from Thursday, 6th June. In the meantime, we will focus on ensuring a smooth transition for the class with a thorough handover. I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mr. Ross for his contributions to our school community this year and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year, NRW takes place from 27 May to 3 June, commemorating significant milestones in our reconciliation journey—the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

The theme for 2024, "Now More Than Ever," reminds us that the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must continue. We are committed to building respectful relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Our students continue to have opportunities to explore First Nations culture, histories and perspectives throughout the curriculum that develop critical understandings that help us work toward reconciliation. A new acknowledgment of country with a wreath created by students across the school has been developed for NRW and will be displayed in the front office.

Thanks for your ongoing support.

Have a great couple of weeks!

Tim
