Connect: Year 1
Hello Families,
It was great seeing so many faces at the math open afternoon. We loved seeing everyone get involved in playing a range of games. Everyone should have received a booklet about the Skye Primary Schools math vision and how to play the different games.
A swimming ability form for Kingswim has been sent home. These forms are important for Kingswim to know what swimming level your child is at. Forms need to be returned to classroom teachers no later than Friday 17th June.
We loved the visit from our community helpers and next week we will have a visit from the SES.

What we are learning in Grade 1
In Literacy we have been revisiting all the sounds we have learnt. In their red home reading folder, there is your child's login for online decodable books and the new activities for those students who like to do extra practise at home. Our current mentor text is 'The Sloth Who Came to Stay' by Margaret Wild. Students are jumping into the rich language and creating their own engaging sentences through the use of adjectives. Students are also practicing using 'because' in their writing to extend their ideas.
In Maths students have been doing a wonderful job putting their addition and subtraction skills into practice. These skills have also been shining during 'Number talks' with more students showing persistence and joining in with the class discussion. Have a look at some new number talk prompts and discuss the math you can see in the picture. As you can see below anything can be a number talk, even things you find in your own home! We are beginning to look at efficient counting and how we can count collections quickly and accurately. We are also looking at our number formation, looking at where we start writing a number and the direction.
Our Inquiry unit this Term is all about helpers within our community. Year 1 have been learning about all the hard work our emergency service workers put in to keep us safe. This week we were lucky enough to have a visit from different community helpers- a police officer and a crossing supervisor. We also are excited for a visit from the SES next week! We get to see the SES truck and will learn about what they do for the community.
Wellbeing
Term Two our focus is on teaching students a range of coping strategies to help children deal with emotions that can arise throughout the day. Learning skills to solve problems and face fears provides our children with skills they can tap into throughout their lives.
Students are continuing to earn Dojo points for displaying the Skye Primary School values relating to Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Relationship.
Next term the students will be visiting Moonlit Sanctuary as part of their writing unit on Australian animals. The cost is $30. Permission forms have been sent out via Sentral.
