Zoos Victoria

Leadership Program

Ashlea Gell

Congratulations to Ella D. of Year 10 who graduated from the Zoos Victoria Leadership Program. Ella was granted one of very few fully funded scholarships to participate in the program over the course of Term 2. The program supports students to develop Science and Leadership skills by engaging in a wildlife conservation project alongside Scientists and field experts. Over the course of eight weeks, the group of Youth Leaders worked with a range of stakeholders to develop a community project focused on preservation of the Leadbeater Possum and participated in a range of visits to Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary, Haining Farm and two overnight camps at Polana Camp. Ella was supported in her project at school by mentor teachers Mrs Sargeant and Ms Gell, but also by last year’s graduate from the program; Gracie S. from Year 10. Using her skills and knowledge from the program, Ella will now engage the Sustainability Team to lead a community project to increase biodiversity and hopefully installation of nesting boxes at Old Pound Reserve.
