Prep Guy
In Literacy at the moment, we are loving learning about non fiction texts and clips. After Simultaneous Story Time last week with Bowerbird Blues, we learnt that Aura Parker; the author and illustrator of this book actually studied and filmed the Satin Bowerbird for her story. Prep Guy have then been learning about Bowerbirds and have found some amazing information about these birds. Each student then used this learnt knowledge to make a diorama complete with the bower, two Bowerbirds and the items which we learnt attract the female bowerbird. They wrote their found information into an information report and presented their work and learnt information to their peers, while showing their dioramas.
In Numeracy we have been learning about subtraction with Linus Minus! Students have learnt how to take away from 20 using counters, fingers, drawing pictures, ten frames, number lines and think boards. We then used this new found knowledge to buy items from our 'shop' and worked out how much money we had to subtract using whole dollars.
In Integrated studies we learnt alot about Sorry Day and Reconciliation week last week and this week we learnt about World Oceans Day. If you would like to see our beautiful hearts that we decorated after learning about Sorry Day and Reconciliation week, they are displayed outside Bunyip Kinder on the grass, as we worked together on this project with local schools and kindergartens.
Students are loving practising their learnt skills each week on Mathletics in Numeracy and Reading Eggs in Literacy. Remember your child can use these two amazing programs every day with their own logins, inside their reading diaries.
Students of The Week
Last week Jackson N. was voted in by his classmates because his peers said he shows our school values of being respectful and responsible. He loved taking our class bear; Lucky home for a week and completing all the special jobs while sitting on his special table.
This week students voted for his twin brother Will, because the students said Will was so respectful, treating others the way he would like to be treated. Will is also responsible and does the right thing, so Lucky went back to their home for another week! Wow Prep Guy is so lucky to have such beautiful brothers in the one classroom.
Lots of exciting things have been happening in 1W. We welcome our student teacher Ms Hill who will be with us for three weeks. She has been getting to know the students and will be taking lessons each day where she can develop her teaching skill. Feel free to say hi if you see her in the yard after school.
In Literacy at the moment, we are loving learning about non fiction texts and their features. In reading, students have explored text and recorded the features such as subheadings, glossaries and labelled diagrams. They developed questions on what they were reading and then identified the key information from these texts.
In Writing, students were able to record important information on Sharks, Blue Tongue Lizards and Platypus. The information that was gathered were used to make their own reports and we cannot wait to Publish a piece next week! While writing these reports students were shown how to separate their information into paragraphs with a heading and a clear picture of their animal.
In Numeracy students have been continuing with subtraction. Students have been using strategies such as counting back and vertical subtraction. This has also been supported within our money unit where students have been practising addition and subtraction skills when making their lunch orders.
In our Integrated studies students have been exploring Reconciliation Day, Sorry Day and World Oceans Day. Students have enjoyed learning about the importance of Reconciliation and ways to keep the oceans clean.
Student Achievers
Our Student Achievers are Florence M and Billy! I am so proud of the effort you both have put into your reading. Keep up the fantastic work!
Curriculum
We have been so busy in our classroom, students have worked so hard on all of their assessments so far. Some students are still yet to finalise some of their assessments, but that's okay, we are getting to them when we can. Students have spent their maths lessons revising addition and subtraction strategies whilst also learning how to do the split strategy. We have also revised o'clock and half past times and have begun exploring quarter past and quarter to times. In literacy, we have begun exploring non-fictions texts. Students have been learning about Australian animals, their appearance, diet and habitat as well as learning about our oceans and sea animals for World Oceans Day. If you have any boxes suitable for dioramas for our students at home, please bring them into the classroom. Closer to the end of term, we will be creating dioramas for an animal chosen by us.
Student Achievers
Congratulations to our student achievers for the last few weeks... During week 6 Archer was our student achiever, during week 7 Luke and this week Evie was our student achiever. I am so proud of all of you!
Our classroom
We have had so much fun exploring World Oceans Day. We are learning about Garbage Gyre's (please ask your children about this) and also feel free to ask them some questions about the rubbish in our oceans.
Some questions I'd love for you to ask are;
"How long does it take a single use plastic bottle to fully decompose and break down?"
"How long does it take for a garbage bag to fully decompose or break down?"
"What is a big threat to seals in our ocean?"
"What are big threats to sea turtles in our oceans?"
A note from Miss Stoll
Hello parents and families,
If you would like to discuss your child's learning or development at any time, please email the school to get a hold of me, or alternatively come see me at drop off or pick up to organise a time for a future meeting. I will be contacting parents over the coming weeks to organise Student Support Group meetings or to discuss any report grades or comments if necessary prior to reports being sent out later this term. If you have any questions or concerns then you are kindly and warmly invited to discuss these with me at a time that suits us both.
Thank-you, Kate Stoll.
