National Reconciliation Week is from the 27th of May to the 3rd of June. These dates bookmark important events in our country. 27 May was the successful 1967 referendum and 3 June was the High Court Mabo decision. Every year we celebrate National Reconciliation Week, because it highlights for every Australian to learn about the Aboriginal Culture, achievements and shared history.
National reconciliation week theme for 2024 is now more than ever.
This theme reminds us that we should fight for justice and for the rights for all Aboriginal and Torres strait islander people. We believe this is really important for our country. We know that the 6.2 million Australians who voted YES are committed to better outcomes for First Nations people, so now more than ever we need to unite.
During National Reconciliation Week at OLA we are doing a colouring competition for the theme of the week, we will share interesting facts in the mornings, host a quiz at lunchtimes and invite students to wear or bring in something that represents our Indigenous culture on Monday 27th May. We are also going to have an assembly as well on the Monday!
Here are some interesting facts for you:
- Did you know…...there is evidence that confirms that Indigenous Australians are the oldest continuous civilisation on earth, extending back over 65,000 years.
- Did you know…...The yellow on the Aboriginal flag represents the sun - the giver of life, the black represents the Aboriginal people of Australia and the red represents the red earth and peoples connection to the land.
