SSV Intermediate Boys
On April 30, the Intermediate boys travelled to Moe to face off in an AFL round robin tournament against Drouin Secondary, Warragul Regional and Lowanna College. With 25 boys being selected from the 55 who tried out, we took a very strong team down the highway and had high hopes of producing a successful day! Captains for the day were Nate Murphy, Harry Hodge and Riley Butters.
The first two games were very one sided, with our boys defeating Regional by 10 goals and Drouin by 8 goals. There were some standout performances, despite the lads showing signs of a sluggish start, especially in the second game where we kicked 2.9 in the first half.
Against Regional, Charlie Lindau and Keenan Boi starred, with Keenan booting 3 goals and getting plenty of the ball and Charlie with his relentless attack on the footy. Oscar Henwood also showed plenty of class throughout the contest. The boys sharpened up in the second half against Drouin, booting 4.2 on the back of some brilliant forward craft by Hugh Cunningham. Cooper Becker and Blake Bibby also stood out during this game as they rolled through the midfield and the wings, displaying composure and skill execution.
We went into our last game against Lowanna knowing it would be a tough task as they always produce a strong outfit. The match was evenly balanced the whole way through, with Lowanna unfortunately getting over the top of our boys with a goal in the last minute to win by 6 points. It was a gallant effort by our lads who showed fight and grit against a very skillful Lowanna team. Riley Butters fought hard all game, with Charlie Kilmartin and Oscar Henwood showing great signs, almost dragging Marist over the line.
The team should hold their head up high as it was a brilliant day, both on and off the field. The boys conducted themselves beautifully and made the College proud. Thanks to Mr Cav and Mr Mazzolini for coming along on the day as coaches and to Mr Hendrikse and Miss Bethune for the behind the scenes organisation.
Multiple goalkickers for the day: K. Boi (3), C. Kilmartin (3), O. Henwood (3), H. Cunningham (3).
Best players for the day: C. Lindau, O. Henwood, K. Boi, C. Kilmartin, R. Butters, H. Cunningham
Year 7 Boys SSV AFL
Despite their best efforts, Marist-Sion College’s Year 7 boys have fallen short of a second round birth at SSV AFL on Friday April 26th. Samuel O’Hara (Captain) and Hugo Scanlon (Vice-Captain) led the way across all three games, displaying dominant performances again Trafalgar High and Warragul Regional College. Marlon Boi featured heavily across all matches breaking lines and tackles at will. Isaac Barr and Harley Dobin were sparks up forward, kicking goals and assisting.Special mentions go to Samuel McDonald for rucking all day without rest and to Nathan Hoare-Neeson who goal umpired for all six matches played on the day.
