Joseph House Story

Joseph, born in Israel around 100 BC, holds a revered place in the narratives of faith. Often known as the silent figure of the Gospels and esteemed among the great men of faith, he is described as just, righteous, and dignified. Residing in Galilee, within the folds of Palestine, he was the spouse of Mary and the earthly father of Jesus.

Despite his modest occupation and means, Joseph hailed from royal lineage, tracing his ancestry back to David, the illustrious king of Israel. A carpenter by trade, a skill he is believed to have imparted to Jesus, Joseph was characterized by compassion and care. Upon learning of Mary's pregnancy, he embraced Jesus as the son of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit.

When alerted by an angel of the peril facing his family due to King Herod's violent intentions, Joseph promptly relinquished everything, including his possessions, family, and friends, fleeing to a foreign land with his wife and infant son. He sought refuge in Egypt until an angel assured him of their safety and guided their return home.

Joseph's unwavering faith and selflessness have earned him recognition as the patron of fathers, families, and manual workers, particularly carpenters. He stands as a timeless exemplar of masculinity, deriving strength from his intimate connection with God to love, serve, and protect those entrusted to his care.

Declared a saint and patron of the universal church by Pope Pius IX in 1870, Joseph is also revered as a patron saint of the dying, having passed away with Mary and Jesus by his side—an epitome of departing from this world surrounded by loved ones. Each year on 19th March, Catholics and Christians worldwide commemorate St. Joseph's Day with a feast, while his second feast day, the Feast of Joseph the Worker, falls on 1st May.

In addition to symbolizing parental care, Joseph's legacy resonates deeply within our college community, where many students have received education through parish schools established by the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Furthermore, 'Joseph' holds significance as one of the middle names of Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers, making it a cherished House name in Marist schools.

House Prayer

O’ St Joseph whose protection is so great, so strong,

so prompt before the throne of God.

I place in you all my interests and desires.

We pray that we all are more like Joseph.

A worker, a devoted family man and a man of deep faith.

Help us to be compassionate to the needs of others, to be kind and considerate to others, particularly those less fortunate than ourselves.

Amen

Loreto Story

Our House Patron – Sister Mary Ward

Born in 1585 in Protestant England, Mary Ward belonged to a Catholic family caught in the tension between religion and politics. She was condemned by a Church leadership unable to imagine new roles for women.

Mary Ward and her companions were convinced that God wanted an order of women, under women’s leadership, responsible only to the Pope, free to be sent wherever there was a need. She took for granted the ability of women to read the signs of their times and to respond where the need seemed greatest, and to remain faithful in such contexts.

She identified the education of girls as a fundamental right and she and her companions devoted themselves to this task among other works of justice.

New to Loreto in 2024

We welcome Mr Andrew Gordon as the new Head of House for Loreto. With deep roots in the Warragul community, having called it home for the past 25 years, Mr. Gordon brings a wealth of local knowledge and a strong connection to our school's ethos. Embracing our motto, "Dare to Imagine," Mr Gordon's diverse experiences and unwavering dedication inspire us to explore new horizons and push the boundaries of our potential. As a community, we eagerly anticipate the guidance and inspiration that Mr Gordon will bring to Loreto House, fostering a culture of creativity, compassion, and excellence. Welcome, Mr Gordon, to our vibrant and dynamic school family.
