If I may take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Dan Nisbet and I am the Deputy Principal Wellbeing, Partnerships and Safety at Marist-Sion College having taken on the role in week 3 this term.

I must say I am very grateful to all the members of the College community who have made my commencement at Marist-Sion so very welcoming.

I look forward to forming positive relationships with you as, together, we have a commitment to our students, to their learning and to their wellbeing.

School calendars wait for no-one and I have already enjoyed the opportunity to meet many students, staff and parents at recent College events.

Year 7 (2025) Discovery Evening - Tuesday 14 May

On Tuesday 14 May, the College held its annual Discovery evening giving the opportunity for potential future students and their families to hear from our Principal and Student Leaders about what College life is all about.

Lead by our College Captains, Bailey Rainford and Zizi Pozzebon and ably supported by our Colour Captains, our students showcased all of the incredible opportunities that Marist-Sion College offers.

Student Attendance - Every Day Counts

Daily school attendance is important for young people to succeed in education and to ensure they experience personal accomplishment with learning and with their social and emotional development. Children and young people who regularly attend school have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives.

School participation is important as it maximises life opportunities for young people, by providing them with education and support networks. Schooling helps students to develop important skills, knowledge and values which set them up for further learning and participation in their community.

When our students miss days at school unrelated to explained illness, they miss out on learning and practising the fundamental skills that will support them in achieving their goals in later years at school and in the life beyond school. There is no 'safe' number of days for missing learning at school. Each day, missed engaging in learning is associated with reduced progression in numeracy, and lower achievement in literacy skills of reading and writing.

The school places great importance in all students being at school on time, every day the school is open for instruction. Furthermore, under the Education and Training Reform Act (2006), students are legally required to attend schools. Details regarding attendance requirements can be found at: https://www.mscw.vic.edu.au/college-community/student-absences/

College Assembly focus - Self Regulation - the power of the pause

Our College Assemblies are prepared and hosted by each of the eight Houses. This provides opportunity for authentic leadership and student agency within the formal setting and celebration of College life. Our House Captains lead these Assemblies, each highlighting a different character strength from one of the six virtues of Positive Psychology as applied at our College through the Wellbeing Program and Positive Education.

Below is an excerpt from the Champagnat House Captains, Holly and Rylee, as part of their introduction and leadership of the College Assembly held on 7 May:

"The theme of our Assembly is Self-regulation– the power of the pause.

Self-regulation is one of the 24 universal character strengths.

Self-regulation is the skill of managing feelings so that they don't reach overwhelming levels and interfere with learning and development.

The Champagnat House motto – Opportunity favours the bold, lends itself to today's theme as it encourages individuals to embrace risk and seize opportunities.

However, self-regulation provides the foundation for effective action.

By mastering their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, individuals can approach bold opportunities with confidence, resilience and strategic intent, increasing their likelihood of achieving success. "
