Literacy:
During Little Learners, we have been learning the sounds ow as in 'show', gn as in 'gnome', kn as in 'knock' and /k/ ch as in 'stomach ache'. When a word ends in the sound 'o', it is usually ow at the end of a word. With words such no, so, go, it is o making the sound. We have also been learning that gn and kn have a silent letter in them and the sound is 'n'. We see gn in words at the start like gnaw, gnome and at the end in words like sign, and design.
In week 2, we are learning about our last magic e sound u-e as in 'Tunes from a tube'. Like in words such as cube, mule and cute. When ue is together as in 'Muesli' and 'Tuesday'
We have learnt the heart words: minute, floor and whole
Mentor Text: The Boy Who Tried To Shrink His Name
This term, grade 1 have begun exploring the text 'The Boy Who Tried To Shrink His Name'. When a young boy starts his first day at a new school, he was worried about how people are going to address him by his long name.
Students have explored:
-The elements of a narrative- Characters, setting, problem, actions, solution and ending.
-Prepositions-words we can use to add more details in sentences such as describing the when and where.
Interesting vocabulary we have learnt from the text: shrink, exploded, reverse
Discussion questions for talking about this text at home with your child:
-Where does your child's name come from? What is its meaning?
-What was the problem in the story?
-How does the problem get solved?
-How does the story end?
Maths:
During maths lessons, we have been learning to make groups of 2,5 and 10 with manipulatives. We have then been applying our skip counting knowledge to find the total amount in the collection. We have discovered when we organise a collection into an array, it is easier to skip count to find the total. Next we learnt how to write the repeated addition number sentence to match groups of. E.g 4 groups of 2 is 2+2+2+2=8.
Math learning at home: sort toys or small objects into groups of 2,5 or10. Count by 2,5 or 10 to find the total amount. Can you write the repeated addition number sentence?
Fluency Focus:
For the next week Grade 1 are focusing on building our numbers bonds to 20. You may wish to practise these facts at home with child. E.g 0+20=20, 1+19=20, 2+18=20

During our first lesson we learnt about how we can ask an adult for help and the How big is my problem scale. We can use this scale to define how big our problem is and how much help we need to solve it. You may hear your child mention the word 'Glitch" when the problem can be easily solved.
