Year Three

Spotlight on Learning

Ephesus Community

Dear Families,

What an exciting excursion our students enjoyed at Coal Creek! We stepped back in time to explore life during the coal mining era of the late 1800s and early 1900s. With heritage buildings such as a schoolhouse, general store, courthouse, and blacksmith shop open for viewing, students had the chance to explore fascinating displays and gain insight into the past. A highlight of the day was participating in a Victorian-style school lesson, where students used slates, pen, and ink while comparing classroom life in the 1890s to today. It was a hands-on, immersive experience that brought history to life!

This week in our learning...

Religious Education

We were learning how to connect Jesus’ story of the Good Samaritan to our own lives in our classroom and school, and to reflect on how being a good neighbour makes our world more hopeful.

Maths

Students created their own rule (algorithm) to make number patterns using multiples, like 2, 4, 6, 8 using calculators. Students used this rule to find and talk about the multiples of a number and to check if a number belongs in the pattern. They also explained how their rule works and how it helped them find patterns and multiples.

English

This is our last week working on our Factual recount on the ‘History of the Aboriginal Flag’

We practiced how to use coordinating conjunctions, which join two important ideas, and subordinating conjunctions, which add extra information to one main idea. This helped us to write more complex and detailed sentences.

Integrated Studies

We continued to explore the reasons behind the First Fleet’s arrival in Australia, what the journey may have been like, and the initial contact between Indigenous Australians and European settlers. Visiting Coal Creek allowed students to truly understand what life was like in the late 1800's

AUSLAN

We have learned a range of signs in Unit 3. We have also practiced how to change how to change the meaning of a sign by adding a head shake to show the opposite, or eyebrow movement to change the statement into a question
