Year One

Spotlight on Learning

Jerusalem Community

 Dear Families,

Last Friday we celebrated Education Support staff day. Our ES staff make a world of difference for our children, they run small groups, help with day to day classroom activities, support our children when they are unwell or struggling and do so much more. A warm thank you to Mrs. Labutte, Mrs. Silva and Mrs. R for their hard work and dedication within our community.

Religious Education focus: Thank you to the parents who sent through their Baptism photos. If you do not have Baptism photos, please send us a celebration snapshot that relates to your own faith. This week we concluded learning about Mary's journey  with Jesus, as a reflection of our learning the Jerusalem community is working on a Mary garden through craft. Craft is a great time to teach children the importance of helping each other.

English focus:This week we have focused on adding the prefix -un to the beginning of words.

Mathematics focus: This week we started learning about Subtraction, which is a trickier concept to learn compared to Addition. To build concept knowledge, we looked at the meaning of the word 'difference'. In this case the difference between 2 numbers. To help consolidate this concept, at home you can work with concrete materials to work out the difference between two collections.

SEL: . This week we continued to look at the specific words in the feelings continuum and what scenarios might cause these feelings. We looked at the word 'overwhelmed'

History:  This term we are focusing on the book 'My Place' by Nadia Wheatly, to learn about Australian and Indigenous history. This week we looked at Michaelis' story from 1958. The discussion is rich as we look at how Australia became such a diverse land since European settlement.

AUSLAN: This week we are revising signs from unit 3A,B and C.

Year 1 & 2 Incursion - Toys Over Time - sharing with you some snaps from the joint incursion of Years 1 and 2

Next week we are learning about...

Religious Education focus: Next week is Reconciliation week. Students will look at how Jesus taught us to reconcile and show forgiveness to each other. Through this lens understand why Australia places importance on 'National Sorry Day'.

English focus: Next week's book is 'Back on Country' by Adam Goods. During Phonics, we will start on stage 7.2 with the 'ar', 'al' and 'a' sounds to read and spell the 'a' as in fast, sound.

Mathematics focus: Students will continue to expand their knowledge on Subtraction through games and explicit teaching of concepts.

SEL: Students will be learning about the importance of reconciliation after we make a poor choice. The key message is "It is ok to feel all emotions, but it is not ok to hurt those around us".

History: We will continue to work with on our Inquiry question based on the book 'My place'.

AUSLAN Focus: Students will be starting on unit 4A.
