Year Six

Spotlight on Learning

Bethlehem Community

Dear Families,

Our Year 6 students completed the two-week swimming program aimed at building confidence and improving water safety skills. It was encouraging to see students approach each session with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. Many made noticeable progress in their swimming technique and showed increased independence in the water. The program also fostered teamwork and perseverance. Overall, it was a rewarding experience to see their growth and enjoyment.

This week we learnt about...

Religious Education Focus:

This week, our students continued to explore the story of Pentecost, learning how the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples, empowering them to spread Jesus' message. They discovered how this event transformed the disciples, giving them courage and the ability to speak in different languages. Through discussions and activities, students reflected on the significance of Pentecost as the birth of the Church and its impact on the early Christian community.

English Focus:

Reading:

This week students learned to differentiate between simple sentences containing adverbial phrases and complex sentences that include subordinate clauses, enhancing their grammatical understanding. They explored words with the prefixes con- and co-, which mean "with" or "thoroughly”. Students continued our exploration of the novel Us Mob Walawurru.

Writing:

This week, students engaged with our class novel, Us Mob Walawurru by David Spillman and Lisa Wilyuka. They read and thoughtfully responded to questions about the text, enhancing their comprehension and analytical skills. Students expanded their vocabulary by exploring and understanding key terms from the novel. In writing, they practiced constructing complex sentences by adding independent clauses to dependent clauses, using subordinating conjunctions. They continued to plan and write their body paragraphs in a factual recount.

Mathematics Focus:

This week, students have been learning to use rounding and estimating when adding and subtracting decimals. They learnt to find the approximate answer to addition and subtraction expressions with numbers to 3 decimal places.

Integrated Studies Focus

Students learnt about the key elements of the Australia’s system of Government.

They explored the roles and responsibilities of Australia's federal, state and local governments.

Social & Emotional Learning Focus

Students learnt strategies  used to help them deal with intense emotions. They used positive self-talk that can influence their emotions and actions.

Auslan Learning Focus

This week, students were assessed on the following:

  •  Signs by using different head and facial movements.
  • How to ask and respond to closed questions with appropriate eyebrow movements.
  • To be able to sign closed questions with eyebrows up and open questions with eyebrows down.

Kind regards,

The Year 6 Team
