Year Five

Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Dear Bethany Families,

This week our students prepared for the upcoming Mass by learning about the story of Saul’s conversion. They also learned about Pentecost, the day the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples marking the beginning of the Church and considered how God's love and purpose can bring about powerful change in their lives. In English we finished reading our second novel study for the term, Dirrarn, and completed writing a factual recount about Jandamarra, a significant Aboriginal resistance fighter. During Maths lessons students extended their understanding of Time by interpreting 24-hour timetables and creating schedules. In Auslan, students learned how to translate the word ‘you’ into a pronoun sign using eye contact, and our Social Emotional Learning focus was using practical thinking skills to solve personal problems.

Next Week we are learning about...

Religious Education Focus:

We will continue to examine our Religion inquiry question "Big fires start from small sparks" by investigating the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and how these can be outworked in their lives to produce good fruit.

English Focus

We will begin our next unit which is poetry. The students will read a William Wordsworth poem called I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud and complete literary tasks related to it. For writing, they will begin planning a poem inspired by the beauty of nature.

Mathematics Focus

We will begin learning about the properties of three dimensional objects by identifying and drawing nets.

Auslan Focus

Next week in Auslan, students will be learning how to sign some command words and instruct others. Some of the signs we will be using are:

  • Work Together.
  • Work in Groups.
  • Sit here.
  • Cooperate.

Social/ Emotional Learning Focus

Next week, students will discuss different ways of coping with stress and practice self - calming strategies.
