Tips for managing screen time for parents

At school we find the students are highly motivated when using their chrome books but we also note the use of screens needs to be monitored carefully.

Managing screen time for primary school students is a common concern for parents in today's digital world. While screens offer educational and social opportunities, excessive use can have negative impacts on a child's physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development.

Video chatting with family, engaging with educational content, or co-viewing with a parent are different from passive, unsupervised watching.

Here are some tips for parents of primary school students regarding screen time:

Set Clear Limits: Establish daily/weekly screen time limits (e.g., max 2 hours recreational) and stick to them.

Create Screen-Free Zones/Times: No screens during meals, an hour before bed, or in bedrooms.

Prioritize Other Activities: Encourage outdoor play, reading, hobbies, and family time over screens.

Monitor Content: Ensure content is age-appropriate and educational; co-view with your child.

Model Good Habits: Limit your own screen use, especially during family time.

Talk About It: Discuss online safety, content, and healthy screen habits with your child.

Use Parental Controls: Utilize tech tools to manage content and time.
