Pathways Update

The Pathways Team at MITS ran series of Career and Education Evenings during May, with the aim of inspiring and informing the Senior students about a wide variety of career and further study options.
The Mushroom Group came to MITS mob to yarn about career options. Kate, Bec, Sarah and Blaise were terrific presenters with some inspiring videos to share, explaining the huge variety of jobs available - from tik-tok creators, and album designers, to truck drivers, fashion and prop source-ers to concert and artist manager roles.
The Year 8's were super keen, and all listened well and asked good questions at the end. Bethany, Norah and Jaydah all said they loved the information and "it was fun". Cata said she'd like to work in that area. Jamelia, Casey, Katelyn, Ella, Josie, Mya, Vicky and Keelan attended too. 8 x Strike Bowling vouchers were given to the 2 teams who won the game at the end.
Nic, Teagan and Georgie from Citipower talked about about traineeships in electricity and had an excellent, virtual reality activity - 'build a power pole.’ Teagan runs the First Nations Pathway Program and part of the program includes a hands-on trade day where the students get to experience lots of the machinery, power lifts etc – this can be arranged for interested students. Great participation from Lexie, Casey, Katelyn, Ciara, Lesharnie, Nickiesha, Lulu and Rosie. Several of the students said they hadn't thought about being an electrician but could really see themselves working there, as it’s nice to have an outside job.
Rei, Annie and Lia took Casey, Katelyn, Lailani, Nickiesha, Lesharnie, Ciara, Keira, Kendyn and Tenielle to visit Melbourne University – we had a tour of Murrup Barak and then dinner at Trinity College, kindly arranged by Will Smith, Indigenous liaison contact there. We were proud of how interactive and respectful everyone was with University staff, and all students agreed it was a very positive and worthwhile experience.
Rei reported on the bus trip home, that there was lots of conversation and positive talk ... "What we did tonight, I really liked it, I can see myself at Melbourne Uni."
"I thought it was really nice and it was good to look at a Uni."
"That was all new to me, and it was good seeing other mob there."
"I was all decided on another Uni for nursing but now I really like it here so I'm going to think about things again."
" I'm really ready to make new adventures and I can see myself at Melbourne Uni. I want to do a Bachelor of Arts."
Homework at 364 Fellas Boarding House
The Year 8 students can be proud of themselves for their efforts this term! One of the crucial areas for our students is putting time and effort into their work, ensuring good presentation and clear explanations of their tasks. This is super important as it supports the transition to a MITS Pathways school in Year 9.
The teaching team continue to assign tasks that consolidate students learning. The tasks are designed so students push themselves a little more each day researching facts, events, and biographies, and their own journey. This opens their minds to the wider world, and what is achievable if you show courage.
Tasks this term have included ‘Where we find Strength’, ‘Body Systems Diagrams’, ‘Writing Sizzling Starts’, and very personal reflections written for the ‘My Perfect Meal’ task. The students conveyed emotional and spiritual connections to Family and Country for the My Perfect Meal task, with a few tears shed upon reading them. It takes courage and strength to show vulnerability.
Year 9 and 10 fellas had a busy end to the term, focussing on revising for Semester 2 exams. Exams aren’t everyone’s favourite activity, but they provide valuable insights into students’ learning journeys and offer a holistic assessment of capability. Getting a good grade also makes you feel good and raises your confidence to take on new challenges.
Students don’t always achieve the exam grade they want and it’s important for students and family to remember that great grades are achieved on topic tests throughout the term/semester.
As a reminder, all senior MITS students can attend after-school study sessions or tutoring, and tutoring is available at MITS via the extremely supportive A Team; all of which enable students to achieve great results in tests and semester exams.
Finally, our focus in Term 3 will putting phones away, being on time to homework sessions and giving 100 percent effort!
Thank you to our volunteers, The A Team, the MITS teaching team and boarding staff for supporting another term of homework; and thank you to all the fellas at 364 Boarding House.
Have a great holiday, and we’ll see you in Term 3!
