CEO's Update

At MITS we aspire to walk hand-in-hand with our parents, families and Home Education Communities, whether they are 300km away or 3,000km away.  The day-to-day participation of our families in life at MITS makes us a stronger and safer place, and results in even more brilliant outcomes for our students.

We love having family members visit us in Melbourne: to share knowledge and connection, to provide support, or simply to share a cuppa!  We are pleased to have our MITS Family Accommodation Space – three bedrooms and three bathrooms in the heart of our Richmond Hill precinct – available for visiting families throughout the year.  To our MITS families: if you’ve not yet visited us in Melbourne in 2025, we would love to welcome you.  Please just speak with your child’s House Manager and they will be delighted to help.

This year we have launched a very special initiative to hear from our community members each term: our Learning from our Community Speaker Series.  In Term 1, Amy Tambling, Principal of the Jabiru Area School gave us a deeper understanding of the Jabiru educational and cultural context, allowing us to work even more closely with our students from Jabiru (they were all excited to see Amy and show her around the Hill!)

And in Term 2 we were privileged to hear from MITS parents and Gunditjmara leader Joey Chatfield, about growing up at Framlingham, the incredible heritage and cultural practices of Gunditjmara people and Country, and to learn about some of the remarkable Gunditjmara leaders and icons who have come before.  Joey’s presentation was so powerful, grounding and inspiring.  We are often reminded of the richness of knowledge, leadership and expertise within our MITS families, and this was a wonderful example of that.

Of course, the most meaningful and important voices at MITS are those of our students.  At our Pathways School Sharing Day in late May, Year 12s Lesharnie, Nicki and Kendyn spoke about their homes, cultures and their journeys in Melbourne.  How fortunate we are to have such depth and strength of leadership within our MITS student cohort!  I hope you similarly enjoy the many students voices and experiences in this newsletter.

Speaking of which, I encourage you to watch this wonderful video of Year 7 students Keelan and Yalarna.  It's wonderful to hear their voices sharing their MITS journey thus far.  Thank you to Fancy Films for creating this video pro bono.

Today, our students are travelling home for a well-earned mid-year break.  Whether it’s enjoying the warmth of the Top End, or the crisp winter of the Kulin Nations, I wish our MITS community a very happy, restful and safe break.
