THE VILLAGE

The Village: Supporting Student Wellbeing Together

At Korumburra Secondary College, we believe in the power of community to foster student wellbeing. The Village is our space for sharing the evidence-based practices and initiatives that support a safe, inclusive, and thriving school culture—where every student feels supported.

Looking Ahead: Our Behaviour Matrix Launches in Term 3

As shared in previous editions, we’ve been laying the groundwork for our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Matrix—a consistent framework built on our core values:

  • We are respectful

  • We are resilient

  • We are kind

  • We try our best

We’re pleased to announce that the matrix will be formally launched at the beginning of Term 3. It will provide a shared language for behaviour expectations across all learning environments and be supported by ongoing initiatives like - Mystery Student - that recognise and reinforce these values in action.

This Week’s Focus: Mental Health First Aid

This week, we’re also highlighting another key piece of our wellbeing strategy: Mental Health First Aid. This approach equips students with the tools and confidence to support both themselves and their peers when it comes to mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Informed by the latest episode from Pop Culture Parenting, the evidence strongly supports early intervention and peer-based support as essential protective factors for young people. Teaching students how to recognise signs of distress, respond calmly, and refer concerns appropriately helps create a safer, more supportive community.

Our Year 8 students recently participated in mental health training aligned with these principles. The presenters commended them for their maturity, insight, and respectful engagement throughout the sessions—a credit to the students that we have here at KSC.

Pop Culture Parenting – Mental Health First Aid: Episode Summary

This episode of Pop Culture Parenting focuses on how adults, parents, carers, and educators can better support children and adolescents through the principles of Mental Health First Aid. Nick and Billy explore how early intervention, calm connection, and consistent adult responses can play a critical role in a young person’s mental health journey.

The episode offers practical advice on how adults can recognise early warning signs of emotional distress, respond with empathy rather than panic, and guide children towards appropriate support. It reinforces the idea that adults don’t need to have all the answers—they just need to be present, responsive, and informed.

Importantly, it highlights how small, everyday interactions - such as listening without judgment or modelling healthy coping strategies - can significantly impact a child’s sense of safety and belonging.
