From Asthma Australia:

When it comes to taking your asthma medicine, using a puffer without a spacer is like baking a cake without flour - it might still work but it’s not quite the same.

We know you want to get the most from your medicines. But the fast spray of a puffer can make it end up on the back of your throat instead of where it should be - in your lungs! So make sure your puffer always has its trusty sidekick -the spacer. Your lungs will thank you for it!

When you use your puffer on its own, about three-quarters of the medicine ends up in your mouth and in the back of your throat. That means only a small amount gets into your lungs, where it needs to work .

You might still feel a bit better, but chances are you will be going through inhalers quicker than you need to and wasting lots of medicine – not to mention the extra cost!

Using a spacer slows down the particles so you can breathe more in. It’s a small, inexpensive change with a big impact. And yes – it’s just as important for adults as it is for kids.

You can pick up a spacer at most pharmacies. For more information, chat to a pharmacist or doctor - or check out our website: https://buff.ly/Jm9DXBb

You used a toothbrush as a kid. (We hope) You still use one now.

Same goes for your spacer.

If you’ve got asthma and you’re using a puffer without one... that’s like brushing your teeth without the brush. The toothpaste is probably going to get in your mouth a bit, but it’s not going to work nearly as well. You’ll drop some on the floor. Then step in it with your socks. Now you have dirty socks. The day is ruined.  But in all seriousness – a spacer helps your asthma medicine reach your lungs where it's needed most. Without one, three quarters of that medicine ends up in your mouth or throat. Not your lungs. That means less benefit, more wastage.

Please don’t use your spacer sporadically, instead use it every time you use your puffer. That way, you can help the asthma medicine get to your lungs where it is needed. Using a puffer without a spacer can lead to three quarters of the asthma medicine landing on your tongue or the back of your throat. That’s not where you want it! Not only is this less effective, some say it can lead to an overwhelming sense of ickyness.

Spacers are not just for kids. Adults get just as much benefit.
