Grade 1 & 2
Term 3, Week 2
Welcome back for Term 3. It’s hard to believe that we are over half way through the school year. We have a term full of fun, exciting events and mountains of learning! By this time of year, our students are becoming very independent, responsible and are well into the swing of Grade 1 and 2 life.
Our inquiry unit this term is ‘Life at Home - Then and Now’. We will be investigating how technology has changed the way we live at home and how our daily life compares to those people of the past. Our visit to Como House will be a wonderful introduction into the lives of people from the 1800s. Throughout the unit, we will be using different forms of digital media such as historical video clips, reenactments and photos to help students imagine what life used to be like. If you have any old photographs, stories or video clips we would love to be able to share them.
This term, we’re continuing our exploration of the past through fiction, with stories like The Jolly Swagman, Mulga Bill’s Bicycle, and the timeless classic Window by Jeannie Baker. These texts will support students in building their comprehension skills, as well as making meaningful connections and comparisons. We encourage all students to keep completing their Reading Logs and returning them to their class teacher each week. Reading with an adult 3–4 times a week not only supports fluency, accuracy, and understanding, but also provides a special opportunity to slow down and enjoy some quiet time together.
Our writing focus this term builds upon our work on narratives (stories) and information reports last term. We are now exploring procedural writing texts and will launch into poetry and persuasive writing. We know our wonderful students can be very convincing when they want to be, and we look forward to channelling this into some brilliant writing pieces.
In Term 3, we will continue our daily phonics focus alongside our weekly spelling lessons. It’s been wonderful to see students applying their growing knowledge of spelling patterns and strategies in their writing. They’re developing a strong toolkit of skills to support their writing efforts.
We are excited to get back into our maths, as students deepen their understanding of key concepts in a fun and engaging way. This term, we’ll be exploring addition and subtraction strategies, helping students build confidence in solving number problems. We’ll also dive into shapes, encouraging students to identify, describe, and work with both 2D and 3D objects. As their number sense grows, we’ll introduce early multiplication and division through hands-on activities, laying the foundation for future learning. Place value will remain a strong focus, helping students understand how numbers work and preparing them to tackle more complex maths with enthusiasm and curiosity.
