Endangered Species Day

On 16 May was the theme for 2025 is “Celebrate Saving Species”. We live in a world full of many animals, insects, plants, and creatures that are approaching the risk of extinction, and their species need help immediately.

This global day of action and celebration was created to keep us aware of how fragile the existence of some animals, plants, and insects is – and, most importantly, reminds us to take the time to learn about why it’s so important to protect endangered species from any further harm.

Congratulations to Harrison Learmonth (Year 9), Kobe Atkinson (Year 12) and Gyanbi Shrestha (Year 12) who achieved top scores in the Endangered Species Day Blooket Quiz.

National Walk Safely to School Day

national Walk Safely to School Day was also on Friday, 26 May, and a great reminder to consider sustainable modes of transport and brush up on road safety. It's also an important reminder for people driving to take extra care and slow down when travelling around schools.

Tips for walking safely include

  • Pay attention when on or near the road. Be aware and cross with care.

  • Never assume a driver has seen you.

  • Stay alert – wearing headphones and using a mobile phone will reduce your awareness of what is happening around you.

Congratulations to Anureet Cheema (Year 7), Tanyian Verma (Year 8) and Aelred Muringampurath (Year 9) who achieved top scores in the National Walk Safely to School Day Blooket Quiz.

World Bee Day

Was on Tuesday, 20 May with the 2025 theme “Bee inspired by nature to nourish us all”.

World Bee Day raises awareness of the importance of protecting bees and other pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to a sustainable future. It is a day set aside to celebrate bees. World Bee Day raises awareness of the essential role that bees and other pollinators play in keeping people and the planet healthy.

Congratulations to Menuli Dharmaratne (Year 8), Reanna Nguyen (Year 9) and Shania Mascarenhas (Year 10) who achieved top scores in the World Bee Day Blooket Quiz.

World Environment Day

On Thursday, 5 June the Climate Canons celebrated World Environment Day. Plastic pollution invades every corner of the planet, even in our bodies in the form of microplastics. World Environment Day 2025 calls for collective action to tackle plastic pollution.

By drawing inspiration from nature and showcasing real-world solutions, the campaign will encourage individuals, organisations, industries, and governments to adopt sustainable practices that drive systemic change. This year’s World Environment Day comes exactly two months before countries meet again to continue negotiating a global treaty to end plastic pollution.

At lunchtime on Thursday, the Climate Canons hosted activities and a Blooket quiz. Thank you to everyone who came along and got involved in the #BeatPlasticPollution movement, because together we can create a healthier future.

Congratulations to our top achievers in the Peat Plastic Pollution Blooket Quiz, Aasrita Kommineni (Year 8) and Alex Pilkington (Year 10), who won prizes for their efforts.

World Oceans Day

On 8 June the world comes together to celebrate World Ocean Day. This annual event serves as a reminder of the critical importance of protecting our oceans and marine life. The Climate Canons observed this event on Monday, 9 June, with a recess activity session.

Our oceans cover 70% of the planet's surface and play a vital role in sustaining life. From providing oxygen for every second breath we take to feeding billions of people and hosting 80% of the world's biodiversity, the ocean is essential to our existence. However, our oceans are facing unprecedented threats, including overfishing, pollution and climate change.

Students were involved in an Education Perfect World Oceans Day Competition to build on their knowledge and earn points against students from all over the country. St Norbert College ranked 38th out of 88 schools, so well done to everyone who got involved. Congratulations to our award winners Tanyian Verma (Year 8), with SNC’s top ranking, Crystal Shaiju (Year 7), Edward Ladyman (Year 7) and Helen Manuel (Year 7) who have all won a prize.

Thank you to all the students who got involved in our recess fishing game. World Ocean Day is not just a day of awareness but a call to action. It's an opportunity for individuals and communities worldwide to unite in efforts to protect and preserve our oceans for future generations.
