What's Happening At Milgate!

MILGATE'S VISION

To provide a dynamic, inclusive learning environment that challenges students to become inquirers, thinkers and caring young people who are able to interact in the global society with respect and intercultural understanding

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

Milgate Primary School would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land of the Wurundjeri People, and we would like to pay our respects to the elders both past and present. Staff, students and the school community understand that we thrive, learn and live on Wurundjeri Country and we stand with all cultures united as one.

REMINDER | A FAREWELL TO KATE MANCARELLA

We warmly invite our parent community to join us in farewelling Kate Mancarella at our whole school assembly on the last day of term, Friday 4 July at 2:00pm. Kate has made a significant contribution to our school, and this will be a special opportunity to celebrate her time at Milgate and wish her well as she heads off on her next adventure. Following the assembly, Kate will remain on the basketball court for a short time if parents would like to pop by, say goodbye and share their well wishes. A gift will be presented by the P&F on behalf of the school community.

REMINDER | CELEBRATION OF LEARNING

We’re excited to invite you to our Celebrations of Learning on Wednesday 2 July from 5:00–6:30pm. This event is a special opportunity for families to explore the learning that has taken place this semester. Students will showcase their selected work samples and invite you to join in on some fun and engaging mathematical games. It’s a chance to see your child’s growth in action and enjoy meaningful moments together.

When families and schools partner in learning, the impact is powerful and we love seeing our students beam with pride as they share their progress. We hope to see you there!

LANGUAGE ARTS

We recently welcomed Matt Glover, writing consultant from America, back for his visit with this being our fifth year working with him. Matt spent time in classrooms, focusing on conferring, an important literacy practice, and worked directly with students to support their writing development.

Matt also met with staff after school to discuss conferring skills and strategies to strengthen our teaching practices. He emphasised the value of conferring as a dedicated time for one-on-one teacher focus, small focus groups, and explicit differentiated teaching. He highlighted how conferring supports differentiation by allowing teachers to tailor their instruction to individual student needs, which is clearly making a positive difference in building confident, independent writers.

Matt was impressed by the depth of our students’ reflective writing, their creative and critical thinking, and the strong quality evident in their work. He praised their genuine engagement and the careful thought they put into their writing, highlighting the craft, process, and genre knowledge and skills they bring to each task.

During his visit, Matt enjoyed observing the Foundation students as they developed their illustration techniques, writing skills and oral language composition through reading texts without written words. He also noted the strong focus in Year 2 as students explored punctuation, recognising how foundational skills were being carefully built through clear instruction, guided practice, and opportunities to apply their learning in authentic ways. Our students showed their understanding of punctuation by reading their writing aloud, listening carefully to the natural pauses and phrasing, and using this to inform their punctuation decisions. In Year 6, Matt observed the revision unit with interest, listening as students thoughtfully explained the decisions they had made to strengthen their writing and considered new strategies to enhance clarity and accuracy - especially in relation to improving meaning, grammar, and punctuation accuracy.

It’s always rewarding to see the progress our students make, and Matt’s visit reminded us how important ongoing collaboration and support are in nurturing strong writing skills across the school.
