The Dante Alighieri Italian Poetry Recitation Competition

The Dante Alighieri poetry competition was amazing, from the bus ride to the Italian cuisine, we all had a blast!

We started our day by strolling around Melbourne University (which I didn’t know was Melbourne University, until Ms Marletta showed me the emblem). We observed their gardens, old Victorian buildings and large landscapes throughout the university. Once we had taken photos of all around us, we moved into one of the lecture theatres and organised and prepared ourselves for our recitation.

When it was my turn to recite my poem, I was a tad bit nervous, but once I stepped into the room, I was greeted by a lovely lady who greeted me and asked for my name in Italian! Of course, in that moment, I was surprised to be spoken to in Italian, but then I quickly responded with what I had learned in class. I conversed with the judge, who told me that the poem I was reciting was her favourite, and we had a nice time talking about it.

After the Dante Alighieri poetry competition, once everyone had finished reciting, we swiftly moved onto the famous Italian Lygon Street. Everyone was famished and ready to eat famous Italian staples. We were given the freedom to walk about Lygon Street and pick where we would like to eat. My friends and I chose Brunetti, and if I do say so myself, their pizzas and calzones are amazing. Once I’d told my mum where I was, she insisted I buy cannoli for the family, and so my family embraced the day with me, through their stomachs.

Moreover, the whole day was filled with laughs and lasting memories that will stay with us for years to come. Most importantly, we enjoyed one another's company in a setting other than school. I will never forget the Dante Alighieri Competition as it has sparked new, stronger and amazing friendships between people I never thought I would come mix with. This was an amazing opportunity to show off my Italian speaking skills, my initiative, and my responsibility, to have an amazing and fun time with my friends. None of this would be possible without our amazing Italian teachers, Ms Marletta, Ms Tancredi and Miss Navaratnarajah. They truly put an amazing amount of effort into creating possibly one of the best experiences we’ve had at and outside of Nazareth.

Year 11 Business Management Excursion - Yarra Valley Chocolaterie

I really enjoyed the excursion, staff were so friendly and the activities were so much fun. Favourite part was making the giant freckle, I also learnt a lot about how the inside of the business works which was inspiring.

A couple of weeks ago I was able to go to the Yarra Valley Chocolate Factory. The excursion was a great opportunity to see how a successful business operates in a competitive industry. It was interesting to learn about their production process, marketing strategies and how they create a unique customer experience. I had fun making and tasting the chocolates and seeing the animals on their farm.

The Yarra Valley Chocolaterie Excursion was an enjoyable experience that informed us on the process and hardships of building a business.  The free tastings and unique flavours made it extra special for everyone. It was a fun, memorable experience and if we could love to go again.

2025 Year 9 Business Expo

In the first week of term, our Year 9 students participated in the annual Year 9 Business Expo. It is always a highlight for our Year 9 students, and also one of the busiest nights in our school community.

The Year 9 students had spent many weeks preparing for the Expo, whereby they created a faux business - where they had to design a product or service, provide a mission statement, research and develop their marketing, target audience, and production. It was many weeks of Project Based Learning, and the students were able to choose their own team and start the process of innovation, team work and creativity.

The night was busy, as we welcomed hundreds of visitors to the Wheeler Auditorium so that they could witness the business display of each of the students’ teams. The displays were unique, creative and colourful. It was great to witness the students presenting their business ideas, strategies and techniques with such pride and confidence. We thank the many parents, relatives, friends and staff who took the opportunity to attend on the night.

The overall winner was chosen by our panel of secret judges - Mrs Spano, Ms Houlihan, Mr Brown and Mr Cowan. The overall winner displayed outstanding teamwork and innovation- and we congratulate Team 'Mind Melts' - Michala Yalcin, Constance Karatzias and Charli Lotkin. Well done girls. The girls were really presented with the Overall Winner certificate and prize for their efforts.

Each of the Year 9 teachers also chose their own class prize - and we congratulate the following team for their efforts:

Mrs Dell’Aquila's class F:

Team 'Kass' - Krystal Ngo, Abbie Evans, Scarlett O’Dor, Shiloh Brown.

Mrs Dell’Aquila’s class B:

Team 'Esscents and Co' - Leah Eager, Sarah Lee, Alessia Trovarelli, Grace Long, Mira Sayegh, Shannel Makhlouf.

Mr Chan’s class E:

Team 'Mochizuki' - Alicia Bobola, Venuri Muthunayake, Aaniya Arora.

Mr Chan’s class D:

Team 'Nail Studio' - Bernice Arigu, Naomi Hung, Olivia Arena.

Mrs Hughes’ class G:

Team 'The Cookie Jar' - Mila Gagic, Emily Vu, Nadia Mauceri, Hayley Savrimoutoo.

Mrs Hughes’ class A:

Team 'Fresh Flow Fresheners' - Thomas Filippidis, Lucas Gelgec, Tuan Khai Nguyen, Caleb O’Brien.

Mrs Kenna’s class C:

Team 'Amore’s Bakery'- Daniel Miller, Masa Basic, Jaidah Kasap, Afreda Jermico, Sienna Footman.

Thank you to all Year 9 students for their dedication and hard work in the lead up to the Expo- and for their energy and enthusiasm on the night! You should be proud of your efforts.

And a special thank you to the Year 9 Humanities teachers for their amazing enthusiasm, guidance and support of the students throughout the project, as well as on the night of the Expo.

Great work!

Media - Channel 10s' The Project

Recently, Year 11 and Year 12 VCE Media Students travelled to South Yarra to attend the live recording of the Channel 10 Show, The Project. Year 12s attended the show on 30 May and Year 11s attended on 13 June.

On arrival, we were taken in for a briefing about audience expectations where we also learnt the correct way to ‘laugh’ when particular guests were on the show. Depending on the seriousness of the guest, some guests we needed to welcome with a hearty laugh, clap and ‘woohoo’ while on more serious topics, we were asked to politely clap without the fan fair. Of course, we had to do a few practices before we entered the studio and we obviously passed the test, as they let us in!

After the briefing we were taken to the studio upstairs where we met the Friday night hosts Rove McManus, Georgie Tunny and Susie Youssef. We took our seats in the audience and watched the behind the scenes magic take place. The studio was full of cameras, mics, TV screens, autocues and various wires and cords throughout. The studio was quite small with only about 25 people sitting in the audience. We found out that not all of the show was broadcast live, a number of the interviews had been pre-recorded before we got into the studio. During the ad breaks we had a chance to ask questions from the panel and others working behind the scenes. Everyone was really nice, especially Rove who the Year 12s even got a photo with as he left. Some of the guests included Jeff Kinney who wrote the Diary of the Wimpy Kid books, Callum Hood from the band 5 Seconds of Summer and blind Make-up artist and Influencer, Molly Burke. When we found out Jeff Kinney was on the show, we all made sure we took our Wimpy Kid books for him to sign which, gratefully, he did.

Both excursions were great and gave an insight into the world of media and the behind-the-scenes production of a TV Show. Students in Year 12 are currently working on their SAT pre-production tasks for their own Media Product, so it was great seeing how ‘real shows’ are created in the same way.

Special thanks to the teachers who gave up their Friday night to attend, Mr Mark O’Sullivan, Mrs Angela Jordan, Miss Moffat, Mr Rosario Ripper and Mrs Teresa De Boer. Sadly after 16 years and 4,500 episodes, the show has now been cancelled with the final show airing on 27 June 27. So, we were very lucky to attend.

VCE Visual Communication Design (Unit 3)

As part of their Design Process, VCE Visual Communication Design (VCD) Unit 3 students are tasked with engaging in a Design Critique. This is where the students present their design ideas and obtain feedback from their peers and other students to action, as designers do not design in a bubble. They need to consult their audience/s to ensure that their designs best meet their needs. The Unit 3 students were fortunate to have an audience of Year 10 VCD students who listened and provided feedback to their design ideas. Thank-you to Mrs. O’Brien and the Year 10 VCD class for allowing the collaboration to occur. Please take a look at some of the photos from the Design Critique event.

Maths Methods Excursion

On a bright morning in Melbourne, the Year 12 Mathematical Methods Unit 3/4 students took their problem-solving skills to the streets for an exciting excursion in the CBD. Kicking off with an Urban Quest scavenger hunt, students raced around the city solving puzzles and cracking clues using teamwork, logic, and quick thinking.

Our group, Yianni, Jayda, Julia, Victoria and me, worked together seamlessly and finished in first place, outsmarting the competition and making the most of our maths mindset!

The adventure continued with an escape room, where we faced intense challenges that pushed our reasoning and collaboration to the limit. From cracking codes to uncovering hidden messages, it was the ultimate test of our skills in a real-world setting.

The day was a fun and rewarding experience, blending education with adventure, and proving that maths goes far beyond the classroom.
