Resources for families to support children's experiences of natural disasters

Our thoughts have been with local families, friends, colleagues and emergency services over the weekend, who were affected by the bushfire in the Kilsyth and Montrose area.

Emerging Minds have developed a number of resources and fact sheets to help parents and carers support children in preparing for, experiencing and recovering from bushfires.

You can find the following fact sheets below:

The Children's Wellbeing Continuum

The Children’s Wellbeing Continuum is an evidence-based tool developed to support conversations around children’s wellbeing. The tool provides a snapshot of a child’s social and emotional wellbeing at a point in time.

The Continuum has four anchor points that range from “Good” through to “Coping”, “Struggling” and “Overwhelmed”. Children's mental health and wellbeing is dynamic, often shifting along the continuum over time.

The Raising Healthy Minds app by raisingchildren.net.au has published an animation video to help showcase what the Continuum is and how it can be used to support children's social and emotional wellbeing.

The Role of a Lifetime

Did you catch the first episode of The Role of a Lifetime on ABC Australia or ABC iview?

The new series explores a range of contemporary parenting challenges — from teaching digital literacy to navigating friendships and everything in between.

Episode One centred around mobile phones and asked questions including:

  • Is my child ready for a smartphone?
  • How do I help my child with online bullying?
  • What parenting tips can our children give us?

raisingchildren.net.au can help you explore these topics further with their wide range of articles on digital life.
