From the Classroom

News from The Seniors
We have had a busy, fun filled time over the past two weeks. The grade 5s have completed their NAPLAN tests and did an amazing job at remaining patient and striving for their personal best!
In English, we have continued reading our novel 'Wonder'. The students have really enjoyed this book and connecting it to real life experiences. Our focus has been developing meaningful sentences through creating complex and simple sentences to enhance our writing skills. We have practiced different engaging ways to start a narrative by hooking the reader.
In Maths, we have been revising time and converting into 24 hour time and revising adding and subtracting fractions. This week, the students are beginning a project of designing their 'Dream park' focusing on perimeter, area, and budgeting money.
Last Friday 14th March, the 5/6s participated in Gala day versing many other schools! We have been training over the past few weeks in our teams of basketball, cricket and hot shots. The students all showed great teamwork and sportsman ship skills which was fantastic to see.
Middle School News
We are very proud of our Year Three students completing the NAPLAN tests over the past two weeks. They were focused, organised and very patient!
For the next three weeks we will continue to read and finish, Fantastic Mr Fox. We will answer comprehension questions, delve into inferential and literal questions and study elements of a narrative. We will also continue to write fiction stories and review descriptive language, character traits and the sequence of events in a story that lead to complications.
In Numeracy, we will review and investigate 2D and 3D shapes. Students will use boxes of different shapes and sizes to create 3D creatures. Students will also continue to investigate the four operations and word problems.
In Science, we are investigating fossils and changing environments and how our world has changed throughout the years. Students will also be looking at animal behaviour and adaptations throughout time.
Juniors Tell All
Juniors have continued to develop their Phonics skills, Junior B students focusing on reading and spelling the /ay/ sound, while Junior A have been using their knowledge of the s, a, t, p, i, n sounds to begin reading and spelling simple words! We are so impressed with how our students are thriving in our literacy routines.
In Numeracy, we have been focusing on all things whole number. Junior A have been investigating the numerals that connect to number values, and have used this knowledge to experiment with partitioning numbers up to 10. Check out how clever our students are at splitting a whole (10) into two parts!
Junior B have been working on partitioning by identifying 10 ones as 1 ten. Collaboratively, the class made paper chains to support their counting up to 120. Students have been engaging in this resources to help them skip count by tens and identify numbers in a sequence.
During inquiry lessons, we have continued to learn 'All About Me' by investigating what makes us happy and healthy. We have explored the ways we can move our bodies to keep us healthy, and we will continue to explore the different ways we can eat and act to look after ourselves.
Performing Arts
This fortnight, each class has been exploring elements of drama. The Junior's completed their mime unit and began to explore puppetry. After meeting 'Grandpa Joe' the hand puppet, we learned the story of 'The Three Little Pigs' and we made our own stick puppets ready to perform!
The Middle School and Senior School have been continuing to work on their plays, working on elements of characters and how they work to support a storyline. We played fun improv games and showed great teamwork skills to keep our improv plays entertaining!

Tennis Program: Term 1 for Physical Education.
Junior and Middle classes have been doing a four-week tennis program during their Physical Education classes.
Stephen Hoh from Zenith Tennis Academy, Heathmont Tennis Club coached our students
where they completed fun activities involving fundamental motor skills and game sense activities. The drills included tennis minor games, forehand, and backhand and serving skills. The students enjoyed having Stephen as their coach and the drills and program.
The 5 /6 classes have been using Heathmont College tennis courts for their sessions.
The skills learnt from tennis can keep you active from a young age right throughout your life. Tennis is a sport that encourages positive play and good sportsmanship.
