Supporting Each Other, Speaking with Respect, and Building a Positive Community

Message from the Assistant Principal – Wellbeing

Here at O’Connor, we take pride in being a Catholic school that fosters a culture of care, respect, and inclusion. As we journey together in faith and learning, it is essential that we remain committed to creating an environment where everyone feels safe, seen, valued, and respected.

One of the fundamental ways we can do this is by looking after each other. Each of us plays a role in building a strong, supportive community. A kind word, an act of generosity, or simply being there for someone in need can make a significant difference. As a college that embraces Gospel values, we are called to be people of compassion and integrity—lifting each other up and ensuring no one is left behind.

Another vital aspect of our shared community is the way we speak to and about one another. Our words are powerful. They can build bridges or create division. That is why we must always choose language that is respectful, inclusive, and uplifting. Our college does not tolerate language that is racially charged, discriminatory, or harmful in any way. Every person within our school deserves to be treated with dignity, and this begins with the way we communicate.

Violence—whether physical, verbal, or emotional—has no place in our college. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our college remains a space where students and staff and anyone who is on site feels safe, respected and valued. Conflict, misunderstandings and miscommunications are a natural part of life, but it is how we handle these situations and breakdowns in relationships that defines our character. We encourage all students to seek peaceful resolutions, practice empathy, and be mindful of the impact their actions have on others.

Finally, we must ask ourselves: How are we contributing to our community? A positive school culture is not just about avoiding negative behaviors; it is about actively promoting kindness, service, and respect. Whether it’s participating in social justice initiatives, supporting a friend, or simply treating others with courtesy and care, every action matters. It is about remembering that our foundations are firmly catholic, and as such we are all created in the image and likeness of God.

There are many exciting opportunities for us to come together as a community in the coming weeks. On Monday, we will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day and as such we are inviting students to wear green accessories for the day. Our House Captains, alongside Joe Schmude, have planned a range of activities to encourage students to get active, have fun, and raise funds for Project Compassion. This is a fantastic way to engage in service while enjoying time with friends.

March 21st is Harmony Day, a special occasion to recognise and celebrate the cultural diversity within our school. We will be running activities for students to participate in, allowing them to learn new skills and share meaningful moments with their peers. This is an opportunity to appreciate the richness of our diverse backgrounds and strengthen the bonds within our community.

As we continue this school year, let’s recommit ourselves to being a community that upholds these values. Let’s be a college that not only fosters academic excellence but also shapes young people who lead with compassion and respect. Together, we can create an environment where everyone feels safe, included, and empowered to be their best selves.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Let’s continue to support, uplift, and inspire one another.

For it is in partnership that we can work together and create a space of respect, care and compassion,

Warm regards,

Mellissa Bell
