Senior School Athletics Sports

Congratulations to all involved in the Senior School Athletics on Monday. We enjoyed perfect weather conditions for this action packed day on at the Flora Hill Complex. It was fantastic to see so many students enjoying themselves and trying their best. The students participated in their age groups and completed eight events with an optional 800m at the end of the day. The highlight of the day was the House 4 x 100m relay which was also won by ASHBY House. It was great to see the students cheering on their representatives in a wonderful display of team spirit.

Every student who participated scored points toward their individual ribbon and their House. Students will receive their ribbons on Monday afternoon. During this time, we will also announce our Age Champions.

Our Champion House will be announced at our Assembly TOMORROW and our Age Champions will receive their medallions at our NEXT Assembly (15th May).

I would like to thank the SGPS staff, SEDA and ADP students for all of their work to ensure this was such a smooth running event.

Some students will now go on to represent the school at the Deborah District Sports on Monday the 22nd June. These students will be informed of their selection over the coming weeks.

Dragon Mile Winners

Well done to all SGPS students who completed the famous ‘Dragon Mile’ running race over the Easter break. Our school was particularly well represented and it was great to see Dusty M, Elyse H and Isla C combining to win the Primary School’s Girls Grade 4 Team event, and Max H, Lenny M and Sonny R combining to win the Grade 5-6 event. Great effort!

Representatives from the Bendigo Harriers Athletics club will be attending our Assembly TOMORROW to present these students with a trophy each. The school will receive a perpetual shield for each event.

Auslan News

Welcome back to Auslan classes for Term 2!

Grade Preps have started this term with some revision of common Fruits in Auslan, particularly from the story of The Hungry Caterpillar from last term: apple, orange, pear, strawberries, plum, and watermelon.

Preps are starting their new topic, learning Farm Animal signs through the song Old MacDonald Had a Farm: farmer, farm, horse, pig, cow, bull, duck, sheep, lamb. They are working on mini-books to sign the animals at Old MacDonald’s Farm.

Grade 1-6s are currently discussing Deaf Culture and learning some interesting things that are ingrained in the Deaf community. We are practising signs that are important in explaining Deaf Culture: Auslan, sign language, interpreter, deaf, hard-of-hearing, hearing, people, respect, eye contact, hearing aid and Cochlear.

Grade 1-2s have also been revising the Food, Drink & Meal Time signs from last term and have enjoyed guessing the signs Mrs R is signing to play a few rounds of BINGO!

Grade 3-4s have been revising the Term 1 signs from their Medical topic, through presentations of some of their Medical signs PowerPoints.

They are also learning about First Nations perspectives within the topic of Deaf Culture, gaining an understanding of “Hand Talk” signs used in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Island communities, as well as sign languages that have been used by deaf First Nations people. We have discovered that there is a sign language called ‘Ailan’ being used by deaf people in Far North QLD that is a mix of Auslan, Australasian signed English (from Australia, NZ and the major South Pacific Isands) and indigenous signs learned in communities!!

Grade 5-6s have been revising clothing signs from Term 1 and presented PowerPoints to practise signing clothes in Auslan. They have enjoyed the challenge of the Dress-Up game to help recall the Auslan signs for clothing at the end of Term 1 and early this term. I was amazed at how fast some students were able to throw the clothes on once they worked out the sign… I imagine they must have fast-speed practise getting dressed ready for school each morning!! 😊 (See the attached photos below.)
