Journeying Together in Christ

Small, and Not So Small Moments

Last week at our school assembly, I spoke about how ‘small things’ can make a big impact on our lives. In a school setting, these small, everyday moments matter deeply because they quietly affirm the strength and positivity of our culture. Here are some examples of those moments:

Students greeting me by name with a smile; the sight of happy faces rushing through the gates each morning; a student seeking me out to share how proud they are of achieving something they have been working towards for some time; a spontaneous “thank you”; visiting our creative spaces and hearing excited voices enthusiastically explaining their artwork or performance.

This week, we held a second round of school tours for prospective families. The Year 6 students who led these tours and spoke with our visitors about St Luke’s and what they love about it created a truly significant moment. Chris and I received immediate feedback about how articulate the students were, and the passion and pride they expressed for their school. We also received emails expressing gratitude and congratulations for our student leaders’ confidence, knowledge and insight.

This is exactly what we strive for. Our cultural covenant, “Why do we exist?”, reminds us that Catholic Education Sandhurst exists to empower regional young people, their families, our staff and our communities to “have life to the full.”

This week, I saw that vision clearly embodied in our Year 6 students and in the families that support them. They presented themselves as empowered young people to our guests—a strong reflection of who we are. They demonstrated personal and social capability, confidence, pride, strong oral communication skills, and genuine excitement at being entrusted with such an important responsibility. They rose to the challenge, not only describing the physical attributes of our beautiful school but also sharing their own memories and experiences—what truly makes this place special to them.

A big thankyou goes out to the parents of our Year 6s who allowed them to be onsite for our 4.30 pm tours, and to those who manned the 'cuppa station.' We couldn’t have done that without you. We had a big group of visitors, which bodes well for future enrolments.

Another big thankyou goes to our Community Group for organising our Mothers’ Day Stall, which was a huge success. Thanks also those who contributed with donations and time.

It is the often small, but sometimes not-so-small human moments that remind us why our roles within the school community matter, that we all have a responsibility to one another, and why schools are such special places.
