Discovery Evening
The school’s discovery evening invited the wider school community in to come and explore what makes Lalor Secondary College jusy a great school. We had around 100 families come in to view the dispalys, ask questions and listen to why LSC would be a good fit for their child moving into 2027. It was great for our students to speak to the families who visited and we hope to see many of those families join our community in 2027.

This week was always celebrated through Harmony Day which saw many students attend school in their cultural clothing and celebrate the great diversity of our school. You can visit the last newsletter to view the pistures.

Athletics Carnival
The school saw the best attended Athletics Day for many years at the end of last term, with around 800 students attending on the day. The students were active and competed hard. The staff tug of war teams were able to get over the line in their battle against the Year 12 students which was an unexpected result. I thank all of the staff who assisted with this day and made it such an enjoyable event for all.

Learning Conferences
The learning conferences were held on Wednesday the 25th of March with a great turn out of parents, carers and students. This event is important in developing a constructive relationship between home and the teacher. I hope that those who attended the event have a better understanding of what their child is learning, as well as how to access information that shows the assessment schedules. Teacher expectations around the learning outcomes for each child should of also been outlined. Continued communication between home and the teacher is available through a variety of methods including Compass.
Silvana Sena - Retirement
I was able to attend the retirement event held for Silvana Sena who was the Principal of Lalor Secondary College from 2009 until 2015. During her time at LSC she moved the school forward with the teaching and learning program and established LSC as one of the high performing schools of the North. Silvana was a student at LSC and had a passion for the school and wider community. Silvana left the college to work within the regional offices of North Eastern Melbourne Area and the Western Melbourne Area. Silvana’s contribution to system leadership was outstanding ending her career in the position of Area Executive Director of WMA. This saw her support and lead the continued improvement journey of over 100 schools in that area. We wish her the best with her retirement after her many contributions to the Government Education system.

ANZAC Day Service
The school commemorated ANZAC day last week on Friday the 24th of April with our Junior leaders carrying out a commemorative ceremony for the entire school. The term “ANZAC” was the name given to a combined force of the First Australian Imperial Force and New Zealand Army troops who landed on Turkey’s Gallipoli Peninsula at around dawn on Sunday, the 25th day of April, 1915, barely nine months after the outbreak of World War I. Galvanised by the example of courage and sacrifice demonstrated on that bloody battlefield, on the 10th day of January 1916 a public meeting of Brisbane citizens voted unanimously to establish the ANZAC Day Commemoration Committee to lay the groundwork for a nationwide, solemn day of public remembrance on the first anniversary of the landings. On every 25th day of April for over 100 years, “ANZAC Day” has been observed in Australia and New Zealand, becoming an honoured and sacred institution along the way. I thank the entire school for their participation on this day and for honouring those that sacrificed so much for our way of life.
I would like to specifically thank our Year 7 student leaders, Andrea Maddalena, Aleena Kaab Omeir and Ryan Guna for their contributions during this service, and the schools’ captains Darko Topkovski and Teresa Lauina for assisting with the event.

AEU Industrial Actions / Victorian Government Schools Agreement Update
The AEU and the Victorian State Government announced on Friday the 15th of May an in-principle agreement for the Government teaching sector. There is the process of ratifying this agreement over the coming month and we wait to hear this week what impact that has on the industrial actions implemented by all AEU members during term 2. As soon as there is new information I will share it with the community, so you are kept informed.
