DEPUTY PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

MS CATHERINE HOWISON - DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

This week we began the process to determine our 2025 School Captains which is exciting but also a reminder of how quickly time seems to pass. Our candidates represented themselves well and spoke with confidence. Each candidate has already demonstrated strong leadership and commitment within our community, making for a difficult decision when it came to voting. From here the students will be interviewed by a panel consisting of Mrs Haeusler, Mr Lane and Mrs Wright. Our School Captains for 2025 will be announced on Thursday morning at a special assembly during Homeroom time.

Applications are still open for other Student Leadership roles  - those of House Captain and Student Leadership Committee Captains. These roles offer a wonderful opportunity to students who would like to make a tangible contribution to our community and be involved in student voice and choice. Leadership is not always an easy thing however there is the opportunity to demonstrate leadership every day, whether we have a specific role or not. Leadership can be as simple as looking at the person beside you and making sure that they are okay, that they are included and that they have what they need. Leadership is about other people and we can all do our best to support and encourage the people around us. Our theme this year has been Intentional Inclusivity and this is certainly something that we can all do, every day.

Term 4 brings the sunshine and this is a good time to think about being sunsafe. Living in Australia we all need to be aware of the potential damage that sun exposure can cause, particularly on days with a high UV factor. According to the Cancer Council, it is estimated that more than 18,200 people have been diagnosed with melanoma so far this year. The average age at diagnosis is 65 years old. Melanoma is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, and it is estimated that one in 17 people will be diagnosed by the time they are 85. This is something that we need to take seriously.

All students should have a school hat with them at recess and lunchtime. Hats are available for purchase at Clarks and also at our Front Office. This hat should be clearly named. We still have a number of unclaimed uniform items in Pastoral Care. If students are missing items it is worthwhile calling in to see if your lost item is waiting for you in Pastoral Care.
