The Science of Reading

Thus far in our learning about phonemic awareness we have covered:

  • syllables
  • segmentation
  • phoneme deletion
  • phoneme substitution
  • onset and rime

In this Edition, we will learn about rhyming words. Please make note of the different spelling of rime and rhyme.  The term rime refers to the string of letters that follow the initial phoneme, however, the term rhyme refers to the same sound words make at the end of words.

Words such as cat and habitat rhyme, as they both end with the same sound.  In a concept, sometimes referred to as, perfect rhyme, the rhyming words not only end with the same sound but also the same number of syllables. This tends to be very useful when creating poetry!

How can you help at home?

As rhyme is linked to how a word sounds, providing a word and then asking your child to generate as many words as they can is a great idea. You can turn this into a game. For example, start with a word, such as cat. Go back and forth with a rhyming word. When someone can not provide a new word they are out.

Project Rockit Anti-bullying Guest Speakers

Our senior students had guest speakers from Project Rockit come in and speak them about identifying and responding to bullying in their day.  Students learned about the different types of bullying and how to respond appropriately if confronted by a situation that could be bullying.
