English
Reading and Viewing
Students will be exploring a variety of written and visual texts. Some of these texts will allow students to explore Space and through a deeper understanding, students will be able to link their learnings across the curriculum. Guided Reading lessons will allow students to revise techniques for comprehension to further expand their knowledge of the text.
Writing
Students will develop their spelling by understanding the meaning and origins of words. Through grammar students will have the opportunity to expand their skills in targeted and detailed learning. Students will focus on writing to inform and poetry during the term.
Speaking and Listening
We will continue to focus on developing student public speaking abilities during the term. Students will be given topics for homework and in class then will develop speeches of varying length to present what they have learnt. Students will support each other and provide constructive feedback so they can develop their skills.
Maths
Number and Algebra
This term we will undertake a project unit on Financial Math. During this unit of work students will utalise skills using the four operations. Students will further develop their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages linking them with real life problem solving strategies.
Measurement and Geometry
Our focus is on extending our understanding of Three-Dimensional objects and their nets, comparing areas using metric units and describing and comparing Two-Dimensional shapes. Students will also gain an understanding of Capacity and Mass using practical experiences. We will continue to expand our knowledge of measurement and distance.
Statistics and Probability
This area of mathematics provides an opportunity to describe the possibilities of chance consolidating their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages. This will link with the inquiry unit in Science and the research students will conduct.
Inquiry/Religion
Mission
Students will explore the Christian concept of justice in relation to community issues with a focus on Mission, interpret ways political and personal choices impact community life, and reflect on ways to participate responsibly and contribute ethically to the local and faith community.
Advent
Students learn that Advent is a time of waiting and preparing for the birth of the Son of God at Christmas. They will explore the writings of the prophet Isaiah and the symbolism of the Jesse Tree to reveal signs of God’s presence in the lives of the Old Testament people and their own lives today.
Inquiry
Students will explore space and gain an understanding of planets and space exploration. They will be identify the planets of our solar system and compare how long they take to orbit the Sun. In Maths, students will explore the size and distance of Earth in comparison to other planets. We will examine how sudden geological changes or extreme weather conditions can affect Earth’s surface.
Social and Emotional Wellbeing
This term students will focus on problem solving, exploring the links between their behaviour and emotions. Students will understand that there are many different strategies that we can use to support each other and resolve issues.
