Lab Report

Jessica Deans

This week was our last week of Cooking Club. The Year 6 students cooked up a vegetable feast, exploring how to roast vegetables, steam vegetables, make sushi and used our air fryer for potato wedges.

Students were broken into groups, with students responsible for the vegetables being prepared in their group. The roasting group had to peel, cut and oil the potatoes, pumpkin, carrot and cauliflower. They also learned that different vegetables have different cooking times. The steaming group also had to peel, cut and prepare the steamer for potatoes, corn, broccoli and peas. They also learned that different vegetables take different amounts of time to cook. Their potatoes became mashed potatoes, so they also needed Nuttelex buttery, salt and pepper as they mashed the cooked potatoes. The sushi group had avocado, cucumber and carrot to prepare. They were given sushi making kits, although some students just used the rolling mats. Six cups of rice were pre prepared, although our sushi experts recommend that we have more prepared next time as they made nine sushi rolls very quickly, chopping them into smaller servings so that they could be shared with the group.

All students were given the opportunity to taste test any vegetables they liked, however anyone who wanted to decline were welcome to. While everyone helped to tidy up our staff room, I was very impressed with Ryan C and Kingston too for helping the final clean up job of dishes.

Thank you again to EACH for giving our school the opportunity to do these bonus cooking sessions, trialling different recipes we might be able to use next year in our Cooking Chemistry lessons. One of the students said, and I quote: “Miss Deans, I’ve never eaten so many vegetables!”

We’ve also had students cooking our veggie recipes at home which has been awesome to see and hear too. I’ve included a picture of Henry who went home and cooked our vegetable pancake recipe for his family. Very cool Henry!

In other Lab news, the foundation students have been looking at Space the past two weeks, and this week they finished off by making some amazing space creations with our Little Architect sets. They were so proud of their work, they asked if it could also be included in our Lab Report. Well done Foundation students!
